Boss makes up her own rules

My company makes us take vacation days before unpaid days, even if we scheduled vacation days in advance. So if you schedule vacation days at the beginning of the year, run out, and something comes up where you need a day off, you have to switch one of your vacation days to an unpaid day. If you have scheduled vacation days left in the year. Pretty dumb but whatever. I scheduled Halloween off in January as a vacation day. Something came up and I had to switch Halloween as an unpaid day so I could get a vacation day this month. My boss approved the vacation day right away but won't approve Halloween off as unpaid, because “she has to wait and see if anyone with a vacation day will put in for that day, because they will get Halloween off instead”. What the actual fuck. I had that day…

I had that day scheduled off all year, and now you're saying you won't approve it for some amorphous reason that you made up. I talked to HR about this, they told me it's her own rule and not company policy, and they see her logic but also understand my reasoning, and that was that.

I can't be the only one who thinks this is complete bullshit. To have a day off all year, then be told I may not get that day off anymore because “somebody else may put in for that day”. That makes no sense to me. What the fuck difference does it make if it's an unpaid day or paid day, you approved it off for me in fucking January.

I hate my job. I feel like HR is incompetent.
