Boss paying late because they are missing deadline but blames bank… random paper checks here and there instead of of direct deposit with no explanation. Wtf is happening.

So my boss missed the payroll deadline at the at the tail end of last month, resulting in us being paid two days late. Then, next pay period I’m paid with a paper check. I ask why this is and I am met with Oh I didn’t want you to worry if it wasn’t in your bank account in the morning, I was being helpful. Like, what? Okay. Now I follow up about upcoming pay period, because I wanted to know if I needed to cushion my checking account incase they want to pay with paper checks again or are late. Instead of being told that we are resuming direct deposit, I’m met with attitude about they have no control over when the banks will deposit money. Instead of being told that we are resuming direct deposit, I’m met with attitude about they have no control over when the banks will deposit money. I respond that that wasn’t my question, and I asked because I needed to know how to account for everything since there have been surprises recently with how we’re paid. I get a dry ass email saying they are not writing paper checks. In the past, we have gotten random paper checks because we were switching payroll systems… fine. Made sense. I haven’t had issues since, but now since they missed that payroll window recently it’s been shady. You are met with a combative response if asking about anything pay related, and it feels like something deeper is happening. I want to leave, but I’m afraid I won’t find another job with at least the freedom I have, or taking a pay cut when I’m finally feeling comfortable-ish, but the pay stuff is really upsetting… especially to be met with attitude when I think it’s valid to want to know what’s happening/if there is a change in pay. I work to live, not live to work, and it’s upsetting that management or business owners act surprised when you ask about pay that you are owed. Boo.
