I am a forty hour full time employee in a hospital laboratory in an at-will state. Worked at same hospital for almost 10 years. We have had lots of staff shortages recently too.
I have also had lots of health issues come up recently along with fatigue, mental health, autoimmune diseases and burnout that makes it impossible for me to work more than 40 hours. Sometimes it is hard to do the 40 hours and try hard not to call out. I am often asked to work extra but have said I couldn't due to my health. Or I am “threatened” that I need to work OT even telling me that we all need to pull our weight. I am sorry, but my weight is 40 hours!!!!!
I have tried to give a letter to the supervisor but he said that it needs to go through FMLA. I thought FMLA was for working less than 40 hours. I am not looking to reduce my hours (not yet) but do I need a doctor's note to keep my job safe from this threat, to not have to be forced to work overtime??
I am looking for another job but burnout makes me no longer desire this career altogether, making it harder to find a job of interest that pays what I need to survive. I would prefer more than I make now, but dont want to make less. Also worried about switching jobs with the multiple health issues.
Can anybody offer any advice?
TIA
