Can an employer assign you work to do off the clock if you are paid hourly?

I work at a fast food restaurant and have worked there for a month or two now, it’s a nice gig for a high school student. However, my employer recently assigned me “trainings” to get done off the clock. I had already completed my food handlers certification for my state and was not made aware of any other mandatory trainings upon hiring. I estimate all these trainings my employer has assigned me may take up to 3 hours in total (rough guesstimate), and as a busy student I do not have much time for this. So I went searching for answers as always and came up empty. I could not get a straight answer on whether employees paid by the hour can be assigned off the clock work.
