Can an employer force you to do night shifts under the threat of reducing hours?

Hello, Recently my job asked me if I could do some night shifts during the fall even though I am a daytime employee. I foolishly agreed and they negatively effected my health. I managed to get through them but was so relieved when my schedule returned to normal. I noticed that they booked me for more night shifts in December. Hello,

Recently my job asked me if I could do some night shifts during the fall even though I am a daytime employee. I foolishly agreed and they negatively effected my health. I managed to get through them but was so relieved when my schedule returned to normal.

I noticed that they booked me for more night shifts in December. I was confused by this since it went against the agreement and contacted the scheduler. They said it was misunderstanding but then I got an email from management.

The email said that due to being understaffed they are foing to make me chose between two options. Force me and apparently other employees to rotate through night shift. Or they will have to hire a new staff member for nights. They then warned me that if I chose the option of them hiring a new staff member my hours could be cut by 25%.

Do you have any advice about what I should do about this? Do I get a doctors note explaining my health issues? Or is any of this even legal?
Thank you
