Can someone explain to me “making up” days you took off?

For additional context, my job is commission only so I don't make any money when I take a day off. I had the 4th of July off because the business was closed, and then today was supposed to be my regular day off as I always have Wednesday off. Instead I got an angry message this morning wondering where I was… and I said that it was my day off. They said I never asked for this day off which made no sense because it is my regular day off, though apparently I was supposed to “make up” for missing Tuesday. I understand this in a way if you are on salary (though you should still get seperate paid vacation!) but I literally have nothing to make up. I also have a real vacation planned in a few weeks and they just assumed that meant when I got back I…

Just wondering what to say to them that sounds reasonable when I talk to my boss. Now my day off just sucks because I feel like I shoved a bunch of work on my coworkers when they just shouldn't have scheduled that work in the first place.
