While this may sound great on the surface, the only one that benefits from this policy is the employer. Offering “unlimited” vacation days means you can no longer accrue your vacation days so if you decide to leave, your employer does not owe you any payout of vacation days.

So far, there hasn’t been any meaningful study showing that offering unlimited vacation days has caused employees to take more vacation days. If anything, they are taking less days.

Offering “unlimited” vacation days is subject to manager approval. Generally they want to ensure they have sufficient coverage while you’re out. But of course there won’t be sufficient coverage for extended vacations because companies like to under-hire. So they cut costs by hiring less, and cut costs by offering “unlimited” vacation that no one can take and you can’t accrue.
