Can’t apply for a job without handing out SSN like it was candy on Halloween?

My kids are trying to apply for retail and restaurant work. The applications are online, so they have to fill it out there if they even want to be considered. The problem is that, just to apply for the job, they have to submit their SSN. I get that they’ll need to give that info at some point, but this all preliminary. Identity theft is rampant. I don’t want them to give that info over unless the company has interviewed them and is ready to look at their background. We’re not trying to hide anything here, we just want to limit who gets access to their SSN. I’ve already told my kids to avoid a couple of companies but it’s looking like a lot of them vet this way. Any suggestions on how to bypass that field? And then they wonder why people aren’t lining up to work for them?
