I work for a major multi-national comapny, and all of the union plants make much less than the non-union plants for the EXACT same position. (I can see all this info from the employee website with postings for open positions) According to managers it is EXPLICITLY because we are union. They claim the union sets the wage at negotiations and the union decided on less than what the company was willing to pay. (If this is true, being non-union would be a 50% pay increase.) The trade off is betrer retirement benefits for the more seniored staff. However i feel like the truth is ALOT more complicated than they say. Regardless negotiations are coming up this year, im not happy knowing people with a much lower COL (cost of living) in other states make 50% more than i do for the same job. I had a bit of a thought this afternoon. A couple of weeks ago I was let go at my position for a large heavy vehicle manufacturing facility. I was doing the work of about three people while overseeing the entire picking schedule for one of the six assembly lines. Bear in mind that I was employed not as a supervisor but as part of the crew, so I was already doing more than I was supposed to be, but it needed to be done. Due to needing to also pick, deliver, organise, liaise with the production crew about mistakes made and then rectify those before the truck moved on, and then still get spoken to when I took two minutes to catch my breath outside of break times. To give some backstory, I’m now 19M who had worked at a golf course throughout the spring, summer and fall for the past 4 years. I worked in what’s called the “bagshop”, cleaning golf clubs, golf carts, and taking care of the driving range by picking up all the balls and such. Next time some conservative states that social security is socialistic, let me remind you that the inventor is a strict conservative named Otto von Bismarck who installed universal Health Care, universal pension and universal accident care to prevent a proletarian uprising. Social security is not a welfare program. Social security is a means to pacify society and I mean that in a good way. We are very proud of that even though the man who invented it was – let me say it nice – an asshole and did it for the wrong reasons. Not to rub it in their faces but to give them context and they can evaluate their own worth. Is what I am proposing illegal? Any reason not to do it?

So I work for a big tech company and the call for returning to office is starting to be sent out. Right now I'm only required to come in 4 times a month, but driving like 40 minutes to be in voice calls all day is a waste of my time and gas. My gripe is another person on my team is fully remote and lives in the same city. Manager isn't too happy with the higher-ups trying to pull us back in either. They said we would at least do it this month then complain/demand full remote as our whole team is spread and only 1 other person would be in the same building.

How many IT “internships” have you seen where they actually aknowledge that it's the most begginer oriented entry level position but suddenly they turn their nose up at you if you haven't worked for someone else already? How many times have you had the displeasure of dealing with an HR department who is completely disconnected from the technical department and has little idea how to pick a suitable candidate? How many times has an IT “internship” just thrown you a course and left you to your own devices with no supervision or guidance? How many times have you had to deal with managers twice your age who know very little about the product you're shipping or even the technology used? How many times have you gotten in hot water for pointing out that an illiterate boomer two positions above you keeps sending you the wrong data, thus impeding your work?…
