I’ve been here my whole life and when I finally learned about labor laws I also learned that almost nobody knows/cares about them. Every time I mention unions someone mentions how they’re “corrupt” or the “expensive dues.” No concept of solidarity. Whatever manager says, goes and nobody thinks to themselves ‘How about no.’ Is there anybody else in this sub who lives in NoVa or even the DMV?
I JUST WANT A BITE
Taxes. If you didn't know- “Starting Jan. 1, the IRS said, if a person accrues more than $600 annually in commercial payments on an app like Venmo, then Venmo “must file and furnish a Form 1099-K” Before this change the bar to be taxable was $20,000 which seems reasonable for “commercial” taxes. That's a drastic change that'll affect more people, even you! Be sure to receive online pay with caution and make sure it can NOT be considered income. This affects not just venmo but zelle and cash app too. Otherwise you find yourself owing money to the government
Think about it. It'd be pretty easy to get everyone's email or phone numbers. Then sign them up with an app and start notifying everyone on the mailing/call list on XX date. The only legal hurdle is that it can't be initiated by an outside party, it has to come from within. And the other big hurdle is big tech not allowing them on the app stores. Then it would be as easy as just creating a website.
Okay, so I've actually been reading up on this and I think it's gonna cause a bunch of issues. Nothing we do on the internet will be private, emails, posts, pictures on the cloud, etc. I know this might not seem super relevant for the community but how long until it's privatized and then the company you work for can buy in, etc. It's a another step down a really shitty path. The main threat of the EARN IT Act is that it allows states to pass a wide range of regulations as long as they somehow link the regulation to online child abuse. This article (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/02/its-back-senators-want-earn-it-bill-scan-all-online-messages) shows that the bill is basically useless and that its primary goal is to remove privacy and increase internet surveillance. The EARN IT Act, if passed, will also allow states to punish companies that allow end-to-end encryption and require companies to scan all…
