No, I don’t think I will.
I live in Illinois, USA. Perhaps it actually is illegal here since we have a good track record of progressive employment legislation?? But in any case I’m applying for work that pays more than my current position and the vast majority of job applications here ask for your current wage. That feels like it should be privileged information and that they’d use it to drive down wages to the lowest possible rate they can get people to work for. It’s depraved. Edit – it is illegal, thanks u/no_god_for_you for pointing out. This is messed up and I’m angry. Here’s the law that they’re breaking , unless it was repealed since 2019 but I haven’t seen anything indicating that
My trial shift at a petrol station
This happened a number of years ago whilst I was a student but this subreddit has reminded me of this situation. As a cash strapped student I was looking for typical crappy service job to bring in some extra money to help with my studies. I applied to my local petrol station as a kiosk assistant and was invited to come in for a trial shift. The shift was actually enjoyable as unbeknown to me beforehand a kid from my school I was friends with worked there too so it went quite fast. At the end of the shift the manager asked me to meet him in his office and offered me the job. He then proceeded to say that employees are liable for stolen fuel and that wages are docked to make up for the loss of earnings. How is that allowed? Kiosk assistants have no chance of stopping…
always read before signing
I work at a well-known educational services provider, and I have an interesting story to tell. I was taken on in December to assist with the spring registration rush, and now that the rush is over I was offered the opportunity to move laterally into another department. This new job has two versions; if I maintain temp status, I remain at $12/hr, but if I go for “permanent” employment they're only offering $11/hr. I specifically avoided doing the jobvite requisition because it would reduce me to $11, and they sent me an onboarding document to sign which had the $11 on it. I reached out to a member of the hiring team and flat out said “the rate on this document is not what we discussed” Still waiting to hear back lol
I don’t know if I can keep this up
I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. My life is falling apart around me simply because I don't have enough money to keep up. My job doesn't pay me enough to live, and things in my life are falling apart. My health is deteriorating fast and I absolutely can't afford to see a medical professional for every problem. I'm having to pick which pains I can tolerate and which I can hope to lessen. But I've also had my car “robbed” (catalytic converter stolen), and I don't know if I can afford to get it fixed. I'm in agonizing pain but I can't afford to see a doctor about it, because I had to spend money on dental work and the ability to see. I also need to save up money for an eye operation so I don't go blind. I'm also helping take care of…
