Pension Plans are a joke

I gave 10% of my earnings to Manulife for 12 years and in the last 2 years, I've lost 30% of my contributions and I have to keep calling them to send my statements. No one is ever around to take my calls and try to fix my investments. Now, I'll be lucky to make $350 a month when I turn 65. Nevermind, when I lost my job and subsequently my house, the most they would give me OF MY OWN MONEY was 1 month mortgage payment. Getting anyone to take my phone calls to reinvest into a different plan is impossible. I have $200k, that in this present day scenario, I can never touch, but was costing me nearly $350 every paycheck. I could have used that money to give me a leg up now. I can hardly see myself living to 65 right now, so chances are I'll…

Any ideas for someone looking to make a mid-life career change?

I’ve been working in the grocery business since I was 16 years old. I’m currently an assistant store manager and I’m burning out I’ve been working in the grocery business since I was 16 years old. I’m currently an assistant store manager and I’m burning out quickly. I mostly stayed with one chain for most of my career. I have been offered a store manager role but passed on it for a few different reasons. I have an associate degree and a Bachelor’s in psychology from a good college. I have a mortgage and kids. I think $50,000 a year is the bear minimum to keep my head above water. I feel stuck where I am because most entry level jobs start at less than that. Oh, and our compensation package is awful (no 401k match, extremely high insurance premiums (over $150 a week for myself, spouse, and dependent) and limited…

What’s The Origin Of The Word “boss” and Why It’s Completely Different From Leadership

Why do we call our superiors boss and how did this word become part of our everyday vocabulary. The word boss originated from a Dutch word “baas” that means “master” according to Jonathon Haeber. Its use was a uniquely American way of avoiding the word “master,” which had quickly become associated with slavery by the mid-19th century. Have you ever heard the phrase “my boss is a slave driver” note the words boss and slave? In those days many workers were fond of using 'boss' primarily because they despised calling their superior 'master.' But all their efforts were in vain because the connotation of the word remains the same despite all effort to normalize its existence. It drives me up a wall when people use the word boss interchangeably with leadership; the two are entirely different as illustrated by Lolly Daskal: A boss has no interest in people development ;…

need advice, am i being silently fired?

hi all, sorry if this isn’t the right place to be posting this but i’m desperate for advice right now. i’ve been working at the same company for the past 5 years, and i get paid every two weeks. the early direct deposit is always in my bank account by 7pm wednesday the weeks i get paid, but today: no dice. this prompted me to check the app that we use to log in our hours and access out employee information and i saw that on my last payroll statement my employer neglected to take out money for my benefits (dental, health, etc.). is this an indication that they plan on firing me?

HR Invited me to a confidential Meeting?

HR just asked me to join tomorrow morning a call with them. And that this call is confidential. That no even my manager must know. I asked the HR guy and he mentioned that the topic is confidencial and that it is about an HR case. That the Point is to ask me some information. I have no idea what this is about. I am fucking anxious and have no idea what is going on. Is this even legal? To ask me to join a weird ass call with a top secret context? That not even my manager must know? Has anybody experienced something similar?
