The California Chamber of Commerce called SB 616 that increases paid sick leave to 7 days a “job killer” bill.

“While the group supported another bill that would increase sick leave to five days, it argued that expanding it to seven days would be “something that really not all businesses can afford to do.” Someone from Europe recently asked here how Americans ended up in the current situation with no worker rights and no protections. That's how. Big capital at work, paying lobbyists to not allow workers to get well and forcing them to work being sick. And that's California for you, the most progressive state. What europeans should realise is that american progressives are further right than european conservatives when it comes to worker rights. https://calmatters.org/newsletters/whatmatters/2023/07/california-legislature-bills-deadline/

How do you get over the guilt of taking sick leave when you’re sick?

I think I have Covid (based on symptoms but test was negative). Taking sick leave makes me feel so awful emotionally that I’d rather over exert myself and go to work sick most of the time.

Co worker being hostile at me because I did my job efficiently.

Basically my way of working is faster and more efficient than what that creature had been doing for years. It didn't like that. It prefers to be “seen as working” even though nothing is actually done at the moment. It even reported me to a supervisor saying I'm not doing my job. I showed the supervisor that all my work was already done properly, and now I'm sitting at my desk watching for e-mails and answering phone calls, waiting for the next batch of customer mails. Supervisor told it that I'm fine. It hated me even more. There has to be one verbal abuse coming from that thing everyday, but I've been enduring it because the pay is decent, and I'm actually capable of doing my job. Turns out I'm not the only one who hated that thing. The guy who did my job before I worked here told me…

Finally got to put in my 2 weeks and let my boss know exactly why. Feels good man

Dear [Name], I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally submit my resignation from my position at [Company Name], effective [Last Working Day]. It has been an interesting and enlightening experience working here for the past two and a half years. However, recent events and changes within the company have led me to reevaluate my career path and seek new opportunities elsewhere. During my time at [Name], I have witnessed both the highs and lows of our operations. I joined as a mounter and balancer and was later promoted to the role of a painter, which I embraced with enthusiasm and dedication. I took pride in my work and strived to contribute positively to the success of our team. Regrettably, over the past few months, I have observed a noticeable decline in the workplace atmosphere and management practices. I understand that every business faces challenges, but…

I am beyond fed up

I’ve frequented this sub quite a lot but never posted on here . I am self employed and have been working for the company I am at for 2 years . I had never intended to be self employed but as I was undertaking a course for my dream profession ( which I am nearing the end of ). The shit that I’ve put up with during my time here . Calling in sick before my shift and one of my so-called managers doing very little to find cover for my shift or get back to me until 20 minutes before to ask if I was okay to come in . I wasn’t but did anyway . I have epilepsy and was going through health issues last year which resulted in me having to cancel one of my work days . Rather than text to check in with me and…

Walking toward a death trap

I’m working hard to get my degree and become a teacher. I know how this country treats teachers but I can’t help but feel like everything will be better once I graduate. I want to make a difference for these kids as much as I can and I want a consistent job. Yet I know teachers are so overworked and underpaid. If you have any hopeful words/encouragement or you just want to lament about your experience teaching, feel free to drop that in the comments.

What it is like to have a ‘good job’

As i am bored and on a train, here is a quick collection of reasons why, although i dont like working specifically, i am happy enough to go and sell my labour to a construction company. (Office work) I arrive at exactly the minute that they start paying me and no one complains. I then go make myself a coffee and some breakfast and eat it at my desk while casually checking emails – no issues My leave was approved within an hour of me asking for 2 weeks off. (4 weeks paid leave) If i need to leave work early its fine – and no overtime is expected. If I just want a day off there is no need for a medical certificate…and the day is paid (7 a year) Any decision i make with the customers is backed by the boss regardless of what it is. The targets…

Just heard my grandfather used to receive $800/mo for military disability in 1957. That’s $8,815/mo today.

My grandmother was complaining about how tight their finances were when she first got married in 1957. Her husband was receiving $800/mo with his disability pay and she was making about $600/mo working odd no-skill jobs. Mortgage was only $150/mo. In today's dollars, thats a household income of $15,400/mo or $185,000 annually.

Better job environment

I’m a fairly newish aerospace engineer(under 2 years) , about to leave the career field, I got really drunk after a bad day at work, applied and immediately got offered a job as a quick trip truck stop manager starting at $35 an hour, I’m seriously considering it, it’s a pay cut but I think it would be worth it to just shut my brain off for 40hrs a week.
