I’ve had many corporate jobs where my manager insists on getting something done immediately because it is urgent or high priority. I at first felt awful if I didn’t get something within a specific deadline. But then I started really thinking about it and realized the absurdity of it all. Almost no one in a corporate setting is saving lives. We aren’t surgeons, firefighters, or other first responders. I’m at a desk looking at spreadsheets and writing papers. Why is that urgent? And yes we have clients as well but at the end of the day if we don’t meet a deadline due to the absurd amount of work and unreasonable timelines then so what? The corporate world has made me feel constantly stressed like every single thing is an emergency and if I don’t get it in on time then I’m ruining a life. It took me a long…
Because of student loans, (smaller than average, even), I had to take a 2 year break from my master's. In my field, I can only top out at about 55-60K with a masters. It's absurd to me that certain career paths in this country consume 8+ years of your life just to end up a lower-class citizen. Thankful for this sub because it makes me feel seen. If you are being stretched to the end of your rope for your family, or your future hope, don't give up. Strike, join a union, fight for that degree, whatever it takes.
(This is from an American, so views are biased and may not be relevant to your struggles) I don't think it's a “eye in the pyramid” sort of thinking anymore. To me, this all feels like it's being actively orchestrated and they're trying to ensure there is a plentiful workforce of meat to lift/move/sort things or canon fodderAI is already being used to take jobs away from anyone who doesn't have a BBA. I have friends who are musicians, animators, illustrators, graphic designers etc and understandably they're feeling pretty threatened right now. Apparently even programmers could be replaced in the future? They're also really into destroying social safety nets and from personal experience when that happens your only two options are to work yourself to exhaustion every day- or die. You have no room to catch your breath. You don't have the option to work “smarter not harder” as a…
Overwhelmed with disgust
Our CEO or whatever the nonprofit equivalent of that term is, makes six figures a year meanwhile I'm making ten dollars an hour and some change. I barely bring home $500 every two weeks and I get treated like im an idiot. I've been looking for another job for so long and nothing. I can't quit unless I have a backup and I'm just so fucking frustrated with everything. Pretty much everyone at the company is leaving that have been there for years. I haven't even hit my year with this place and close to 15 people left or got laid off.
Companies DON’T care.
My uncle died from cancer last week. He worked for freedom mortgage & they denied him medical leave when the man way dying. All week they've been calling and fedexing him letters threatening his job because he didn't show up to work because he was dead.
This Group is Not Really Anti-work
I have read through a large-ish number of posts in this group; in the most part, the people aren't really anti-work. They are mostly anti-unfairness. They are not willing to be taken advantage of. They want a fair deal. It is each individual's responsibility to themselves that they insist on a fair deal. It is up to each individual to ask for fair pay. To ask for profit sharing and bonuses. If an individual can't get that where they currently are, it is up to each individual to find a place where they can. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to stand up for themselves, to represent them selves, and keep working on getting the best they can.
