Dealing with Religious Talk in the Workplace

Hey all, I've got a bit of a situation at work that's been bugging me and thought maybe you guys could throw some advice my way. So, here's the deal: I work for a state audit department, and it's a pretty small outfit – just my boss and I. We've gotten to know each other fairly well, but there's this one thing that's been putting me on edge. See, my boss is pretty religious, which I've got no problem with, everyone's got their own beliefs and that's cool. The thing is, she loves to bring up her faith at work. She's shown me pictures from her baptism, chats about how current events are somehow tied to the bible, and even tosses out a “I'll pray for you” every now and then. Now, I've tried to be upfront and told her I'm not exactly comfortable talking about religion, politics, or anything…

My boss took away the stereo from the employees in the back because he hated hearing music in Spanish. I bought them another one.

I work for a construction company that employs a lot of Latino men. I mainly stay up front with my boss on the computer, doing admin and project management work for him as directed. I love the guys in the back of our shop; they work incredibly hard and are the heart and soul of the company. Usually, they are listening to Mexican music while they work on a big speaker because there's a lot of noise from the machines, etc. On Monday, we came into work and the stereo was gone. Halfway into the day, my boss admitted to me that he removed it from the workplace because he “hated that loud Spanish music and it gave him a headache.” Where we sit, we can barely hear the music and we both are usually listening to whatever we want from our computers with earbuds. I thought it was incredibly…

Please read this before telling me I’m overreacting

(This is a repost, because I was so terrified of everyone hating me that I deleted the original before anyone could comment. Please don’t be angry at me for quitting this job) I’m 16 years old and have all sorts of mental health issues. Anxiety, Autism, Depression, and OCD are the main ones. I can’t go anywhere, I can’t talk to anybody, I can’t do ANYTHING or else I’ll have a mental breakdown. So my family and I decided to have me work at a nearby community center under a supported work program for mentally ill or handicapped people. I was going to be paid $12 an hour. The job description said we would be doing customer service, sitting at the front desk and checking people in. Instead, they made us wipe windows. All day for two days. Then they ran out of windows, so we dusted the railings. They…

Don’t Get Angry at Companies…

Who post job listings with ridiculous requirements. Who post salaries well below the market. They have just saved you hours of time fine tuning a resume. They have saved you spending hours wasted interviewing only to get a low ball offer.

What was the moment you realized management were scumbags?

Mine was when an old boss tried to throw me under a bus. Guy was the “friends with the right people” type who was blatantly in over his head, but seemed a decent guy. Anyway, one time he gave me very precise instructions on a task. I was sure they were wrong, but he assured me otherwise when I questioned it Of course when his boss wasn't happy, he tried to dress me down as if it weren't his own mistake. The best part? When I fired back, he accused me of not being a team player and only looking out for myself.

DoorDash switching to hourly pay for drivers

Yes! Seems like a big step in defeating the no-benefits, gig work system. By Kellen Browning Kellen Browning reports on DoorDash and other gig companies. June 28, 2023 Updated 10:41 a.m. ET DoorDash said on Wednesday that it would begin giving its delivery drivers the option to be paid an hourly minimum wage, instead of earning money for each delivery. The significant shift in compensation could be an answer to concerns that some delivery people are not paid fairly. It could also add an incentive for drivers to pick up smaller orders that don’t pay as well and that they would typically avoid. Drivers will be able to choose whether they earn money for each order — usually a few dollars in base pay plus compensation for miles driven — or receive a flat hourly amount, DoorDash said. The hourly rate includes only active time, meaning time between accepting and…
