My answers to common questions or issues (this should resolve about 50% of workplace dysfunction in the U.S.)

Manager: I’m having a hard time finding recruits for xyz job My answer: if it’s relatively low paying, offer better pay. If you’re having a hard time finding qualified candidates, offer paid training. Create better work conditions. Manager: I need to make more sales My answer: work on updating your digital marketing strategies, update your sales training, and build better sales relationships with customers (build rapport). Work to better understand your customers and differentiate from competitors. Manager: our organization needs more donations My answer: look for more grant opportunities and analyze your donor base. Who are they and how are they finding out about your non-profit? Are they able to find out more online? Do they understand the unique aspects of your non-profit and the value of it? Manager: I need consistent sales that are efficient My answer: work on finding specific types of clients and create efficient processes. How…

Are you worried about AI taking your job?

I've thought about this for years and now it's finally here. At present, I still hear about a labour shortage but I personally think that will change with time as AI methods become implemented. The jobs generated by AI will not compensate for the ones lost, imo. What are your thoughts?

My employer told me to break the law in order to get to work this weekend.

Just venting, sort of. This Saturday, I lost track of my phone. We think it fell out of my pocket while we were hurrying in from the back yard, getting harassed by bees. It was outside in the rain all night. I'm usually very careful since I have a card wallet and since I am required to use my (personal) phone for work – I drive quite a bit and am tracked with an app. Since my license is also in the card wallet, I wasn't going to be able to drive for my shift on Sunday. I called my team leader to notify her and she asked me if I “can't just give them my license number if I get pulled over”. In my state, driving without your driver license amounts to an infraction and points on your license. I told her no, because I don't want to jeopardize…

11 month employee, training outside calendar, not paid at regular rate

Posting this because I had a question of how to approach this particular situation. Background here is I am an 11 month employee (school administrator). Unique situation is certain admin are 11 month, others are 12 month. Every summer we have summer learning institutes, which every other year is done when all admin are back on the clock for their work dates. This year, the district decided not to do that and has this planned during a time where 11 month employees are not on their work calendar. The other caveat to this is that they are not going to pay us at our regular rate, and instead a stipend which is possibly as much as 60% less than our rate. During the dates I have family visiting from out of state, and I only see them usually once or twice a year (it is my son’s birthday this week).…

Just do a good job

Had a staff meeting where leadership asked what they could do to improve morale. I just said that letting people know when they are doing a good job could go a long way. We have a lot of new staff and there is a big learning curve. One of the leaders got angry, very angry, she basically said: “that's the expectation, you should be doing a good job, we don't need, and shouldn't need to tell you if you are. We will focus on when you are not doing a good job and make training plans from there. ” Basically, if you screw up, you will be berated and belittled by verbal abuse and write ups. They have a 3 strike system, and you are fired. There's a high turnover and a training class of at least 5-10 every week for some position. They have an immigration program, and they…

Can you put fake achievements/awards in your resume?

I noticed that when I googled many of my colleagues awards that they got for some contest, I could not find either the competition, their name listed, or the project listed. I assume that some contest holders don't keep a database of past participants. What's to stop me or someone else from making up some contest or putting himself as a first place winner to pad a resume?

nObOdY wAnTs tO wOrK aNyMoRe (a short rant)

I applied for a job. I was called in to interview. During the interview I was told the starting wage is $4/hr lower than the wage listed on the 'now hiring' sign. I need the work so I accepted the job, saying I could only work morning shifts, and that I cannot stay late into the evenings. Arrive on Day 1 at 8am as instructed. Manager on duty didn't know I was hired, and didn't know I was starting that day. They fumble with the computer for almost 15 minutes, then inform me they can't figure out how to enter me into the system. They ask me to leave and return later that afternoon. I go home. I sit all day waiting till 1pm. At Noon they call me and tell me 'they're too busy to train today, please return tomorrow'. I return on Day 2 as instructed. Manager on…

To my fellow people in Digital Marketing:

Is anyone getting any of these “jobs” that are constantly being posted? Me and a few friends have been job hunting in the space for over a year now, each of us applying to probably well over 100 jobs. I've been ghosted, had interviews and been ghosted or just rejected even though I have over 5 years experience and match every “requirement.” A lot of these jobs I notice are still sitting there or re-posted… so are these companies even looking for employees? Or just posting job listings to seem like they're in demand? It's at the point where I'm now looking to go into a new industry altogether.

Late-stage capitalism is failing us all—we need a new socioeconomic contract. What should it look like?

I was reading another post on this subreddit this morning, and it really hit me hard. I’ve been feeling very similar lately. It got me thinking. Capitalism thrives on a socio-economic theory similar to that of Darwinism and survival of the fittest-it basically says “winner-takes-all”. In the early stages of capitalism, this works well. It mobilizes resources, orients efforts, and creates local maxima of wealth that can create significant benefits for people. However, in late stages of calitalism, it concentrates resources and power to the few. We have companies whose market cap is within spitting distance of the entire US tax revenue. We have individuals whose net worths surpass entire countries combined. Something has to change. My question is—what does it change to in your perspective? What is the forward facing, productive socio-economic contract that could fix things?

Ways to go forward

There's a large place for us to be angry, give up, decide there's no hope. This book gives me a lot of hope and inspiration. It gave me ways I can make change in places I thought lost. It's not upon us to accept the burden of stupidity, ignorance, or any way others may be dismissive of the plight of the common person. But, this is a way for the individual to feel, and see and act, upon a way forward. Not the only way, but it is a way.
