Opinion on Cell Phone Policies

What are you opinions on no cell phone policies? Some people are fine with it, others feel they are grown and shouldn't be prohibited from using their personal device. I would like to know what this sub thinks on the matter.

Interviews after getting fired

I was being bullied at work and complained about it on my Facebook. This got back to management and I was fired Wednesday. I fully understand that I was a very trusting idiot to complain on Facebook. Having said that, how do I address why I was fired in future interviews (because, of course, I still have to work )?

For the last 3 years, I’ve only worked 3-4 months of the year. AMA

I work in the seasonal fishing industry in Alaska that runs from June to September, I end the season making about 20k usd. After the season is over I live in Thailand with my girlfriend and spend roughly 1500 usd a month and live a very comfortable life in a small apartment relaxing and playing video games or hanging out at the beach ️ ️ I don't live luxuriously by any means but I have time to pursue hobbies and whatever else I want. When I am working, the work is very grueling 16 hour shifts 6 or 7 days a week in a cold and wet fish packing factory. I live on site and meals and room is provided for free by the company.

The reaction to the writers strike makes me nauseous

Just to be clear, I hope the writers never write a SINGLE word again untill they get the payment and money they deserve. Is ridiculous that a multi billion dollar industry that relies so heavily on writing refusing to even adjust their salaries . Now that Ive said that, its nauseating to see the artists talk about the writers. I just read a comment from Shonda Rhimes saying that for writers not being able to afford a normal life is absurd. Oh really? Well, do I have a story to tell you! This is how it is in EVERY SINGLE INDUSTRY right now! No one is being to afford a normal life anymore. It finally caught up to the writers, but normal people have been struggling with this for the longest time. And it sickens me to see these same artists arriving in extremely high society events with dresses and…

Can I vent here?

About ten years ago I worked at a warehouse doing pick and pack. They were and still are a hugely successful medical supplies company. Pay was abysmal at less than $11 an hour so I took a mid shift that paid an extra .40 cents. Those bastards in management adjusted the shift just early enough to avoid paying us that .40 cents shift differential. I had to go to third shift because I couldn't afford to lose that .40 cents. The start time was set but we never knew when we would be released. From six hours to twelve depending on the workload assigned to us. How are we supposed to have a life outside of work if we never knew when we would get to leave? We each had our own little packing station. No fan, no climate control, no seats. I tore a meniscus. And raises? I learned…

Loaded guns, interview N bomb, and forklifts on the interstate. My worst boss ever

Oh boy. Steve. First things first, need to get this out of the way. Most of you will say “why did you take the job?”. Well, due to a disability, I have a very difficult time getting work. I had to take what I could get ASAP. Anyways! Fun story time. I was in a horrible place and needed work badly. My buddy owned a cabinetry company and offered me a job. I went in to interview with him and the co owner, a middle aged man named Steve. Within the first couple minutes in the interview, he loudly announces to me that he doesn’t allow “N***** music” in his warehouse. I gave him a shocked look, and he quickly moved on. I contemplated leaving right there, but I had zero money and a child to feed. Maybe he didn’t mean that way.. I’ll give him the benefit of the…

I’m now making more money to work at a fast food restaurant than I was making at a daycare.

I recently quit my daycare job because I was struggling to support myself on the pay and was expected to work 50 hour weeks to make up for the lack of staff. Now I have a job in fast food where I’m making a whole $1.50/hr more with no mandatory overtime. Why is it that we have decided that people who work with kids should be paid in the emotional fulfillment their job brings and not in actual money? I loved working with babies but why would I dedicate all my energy and 50 hours of my week for less than I can make selling fried chicken? I guess I’m just upset at how under-appreciated I felt as a daycare worker, and getting a job with more pay and more benefits in a “wage slave” position is just the nail in the coffin.

6 hour work days > 32 hour work week

A few thoughts: -30 hours a week is 104 hours less per year( 3 extra weeks of rest) -6 hour work days, synchronized with a six hour school day (9am -3pm) would save a ton in child care costs that many parents incur before and after school. a six hour night shift is going to be easier/healthier than 8+ hours if there's a need to do a double shift, this would max out at 12 hours (instead of 16hours if you do a double 8hr). if you have a shitty commute, shorter work days mean you have more free time per day. its easier to keep the typical monday-fri schedule than the 4 day work week. Just a few thoughts…

Question about payouts for awards

I am not sure how to search for employment rules regarding this. I was notified in January that I won an award in recognition of my work, and it came with a $2000 bonus. I was given the plaque for the award last month, but still haven't received the funds. Is there a legal timeline that an employer has to give award/bonuses? This keeps happening for other things… we can do extra work as a side contract and we get a lump sum payout after it's done (it's over our normal job requirements). It regularly takes them months after the work is done to pay it out. It's bonkers frustrating. I am in FL, if that means anything.
