Question about promotion practices
Want to get a sanity check on whether or not this is odd or normal practice in most companies. My current department (not sure if company wide) almost never posts jobs considered promotions. They essentially pick who they will promote and then announce it. No one else gets the opportunity to apply for it, we don't even know about the opening until the manager one day announces Person X just got promoted to Position Y. Is this normal? I thought we would at least get the illusion of having a chance for the promotion, but it seems it's all done behind the curtain. ETA: I work mid-level corporate job at a major company.
Interestingly it was 3:45pm and nobody was there. Also not the only mall store shuttered while we were there.
I'm tired of the tipping culture. Business owners won't pay a living wage for their workers and some even steal tips. And some workers expect tips for doing nothing but take an order in a drive thru. This needs to end. We should as customers start asking to be tipped for coming in their store and buying something, extra points if we do it with a smile and are friendly to the workers. If workers get tipped for ridiculous reasons then why shouldn't the customer? Maybe this could be a way for the whole country to realise how bad this culture is if everyone started demanding tips in protest.
Remote work time
For all you remote workers out there, are you still working the traditional 8-5? Or is the time-suck flexible if you get stuff done?
I (23M) started last September at a consulting firm. I get both sick days and PTO, but my PTO rolls over while my sick days do not. Assuming I don't actually need my sick days by the end of the year for illness/injury reasons, I'd like to use some of them for vacation before I lose them. I'd prefer to use them in conjunction with PTO so that I have a couple sick days on reserve just in case. Any advice on how to do this without looking bad to my boss? As a note, I do very much like my job and my coworkers, so I'd rather just use my PTO than do anything to screw that up. Maybe that puts me in the wrong subreddit but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Return to office.
Was just told we have to go back to the office 3 days a week. I've been remote for almost 10 years now. Such stupid bullshit. Time to get the resume updated and start applying.
