Title says it all. Some background information: I work for a large temp agency. They moved my colleague to another department so I've been working by myself for the past few weeks. Taking days off now is apparently very difficult since there is no one to cover for me. They still haven't found any replacement for my colleague so I have to fend for myself atm. A few weeks ago, I scheduled an appointment in the hospital for my nose – nothing life-threatening but the waiting lists are very long so I was lucky that I could squeeze in this easily. I called in sick on the day of my appointment since they wouldn't allow me to take the day off. My manager keeps on calling and texting me begging if I'm still able to work today. Just a few hours pls because they don't have anyone who can cover…
I come from Sweden. As good labour laws as we have today here, they weren't always this good. In the beginning of the 1900s we workers had to go out in massive strikes, and we were even shot at by military (Skotten i Ådalen if you're interested). We slowly started to unionize and built a strong force of workers working together for each other. Today we don't even have a minimum salary by law, because our unions are so strong almost every company is forced to follow their lead. I see a lot of posts on here about wanting change in America. But trust me, big corps isn't going to do shit until you fight for it. So I hope that you will organize, and unionize, and do general strike if necessary. Americans have such a strong spirit, and we swedes look up to you in a lot of ways.…
Don’t block my way!
Owner actually expects free work
I'm a massage therapist and the owner of the salon I work at texted me this when I asked for my unbooked time blocked off for the day. If I have no appointments I block off four hours into the future so I'm not on call. I am only paid commission for my massages and no wage for anything else I do. Ive had a lot of jobs I've been abused at but I've never had someone be so bold as to tell me to work for free and promote their business on my social media pages in order to not be on call for free.
Ripped from Tumbler
During covid it was pretty much mandatory for every employee everywhere to take a covid test before they could return to work if they were feeling symptoms. When my bosses (the two coworkers) were feeling symptomatic, not only did they insist that they get it done at the hospital conveniently owned by the same people that own the place we work at, but they have the audacity to send a bill to them TWO YEARS later asking for money. Everyones on the same page at my job, they can get fucked.
