50 Million trapped in modern slavery There is so much reference here to how we are all slaves – and its just hard to parse that with the enormity of whats going on globally and how much freedom, albeit with issues, we have in the west. I feel like crying slavery lessens the legitimacy of the arguments across the board.

Why do this?
Went for an interview last week on Tuesday. Seemed to go really well and the manager was excited to bring me on but said she had to talk to the owner. On Thursday, I send a follow up message. On Sunday she responds asking if I could come in and meet the owner on Tuesday. I figure this is a good sign since I've been passed on to the decision maker, but when I arrive on Tuesday the owner essentially starts from scratch and had no prior knowledge of me beyond that I'd be coming in for this interview. Still, I go through the process again and try my best to impress and answer his questions and at the end he says he has other interviews to do but will let me know by tonight or tomorrow. I heard nothing back yesterday and haven't heard anything so far today. Should…
Headline: Most remote workers say they'd take a pay cut to continue being allowed to work from home, a new poll shows Original article: https://www.businessinsider.com/us-remote-workers-would-take-pay-cut-to-keep-wfh-2023-5 Archived copy: https://archive.ph/Lay9l TLDR: Supposedly a poll was taken and 55% of those surveyed said they would accept a pay cut to current pay to stay work from home. Opinion: This is just more propaganda against workers and their power as work from home employees. They can't force us back so they are laying the groundwork to reduce pay for these jobs that can be clearly worked from home. This article calls it a “pay bump” to go back into the office, but it's a thinly veiled threat of reducing pay for people who do the same jobs from home. Article quoted below: Most remote workers say they'd take a pay cut to continue being allowed to work from home, a new poll shows 55…

Here in Scotland a popular bakery announced it had to make 100 staff members redundant due to financial issues, it was then bought by another company. The new owner says he they have no responsibility to pay any redundancies and will not be doing so. 100 people denied their rightly owed redundancy package a lot of them having worked there for decades. Thankfully their Union is taking legal advice and will try and fight it so they can get everything they’re owed. It just goes to show heartless these owners can be the man was on the news standing next to people the business he now owns made redundant saying he owes them nothing.
I work in a restaurant/brewery, and we are closed 2 days a week because we’re short staffed. If we didn’t close, most of the BOH would be working 6-7 days a week. It’s a revolving door right now, with each person hired 2 more quit. I work on the days the restaurant is closed, and mostly just direct people to the beer garden/brewery. Some lady came in today and saw we were closed, and asked why. I explained, and she said “you know, I used to work my ass off when I was younger.” I responded by saying people here work hard and deserve to have a day off. She responded by giving me unsolicited advice that I should work hard when I’m young because it’ll suck to work hard when I’m older. I told her happiness is important, too, and she said “well I was happy when I worked…
I was talking to one of my older co-workers, and he was asking why I work two jobs, I told him because my rent is $1800. He was like well damn you must live in a mansion, I said no just an 800 sqft apartment. He didnt believe me at all, so I showed him on my phone what all the apartments are going for in our town, and he was like wtf my mortgage is half that on a 4br house. He showed me pics of his house and it was huge and pretty decent, I looked it up on zillow and its worth $400 000. He bought it decades ago when it was around $100k. Me and all my coworkers talk about the housing crisis a lot, and all the older guys who have been working there for 20-30 years all said they bought houses in their early…

I live in an older building and there are parts of it that need some patching. I didn't realize just how much though until a bat woke me up in my sleep. Normally bats aren't a big deal, small and fly about the ceiling. This bat however was large and flew aggressively & attacked. This is a big sign of rabies (abnormally aggressive behavior). I left the apartment to stay in a hotel then went to the emergency room the next day to get rabies treatment. I'm a bit of a wimp, I must admit. I was unwilling to return to my apartment in fear of both the bat and the fact that it was not secure. It took a week for the landlord to get someone in to patch the potential entry ways for further animals & whatnot. I'm a game developer. During this time my company was in…
