Not for me but to rat out senior management for a hostile environment. Do i cross the big boss or just play dumb
Memories of being a restaurant manager.
Got to thinking about this the other day and how messed up it was. 1998/1999 range- recent college grad, with a hospitality degree, tons of restaurant experience both FOH and BOH- Hired as a Manager for a higher end restaurant company (privately held). Working for a location in Miami for maybe a year or so. Come into work one day, and get asked by my GM, “how do you feel about Boca Raton?” Me: “why?” Him: “Oh, you work there now, you start Wednesday. Best of luck.” Keep in mind, this was the first ever conversation about me going anywhere else, and the distance really required relocation. (1:20 drive each way under normal circumstances- for a 10-12 hour regular day in the restaurant biz, not feasible to commute) Being a 22 yr old kid without much of a clue, I just went along with it and didn’t even push back.…
I just found out that my boss is paying her daughter for 80hours of work every 2 weeks when she doesn’t actually work with us any more since she’s in college. My coworker nonchalantly told me he’s seen the paychecks addressed to the daughter before, but he didn’t catch the amount. But it all makes sense now.. A couple of months ago my boss was absolutely horrified that i kept the big envelope of all of our paychecks up front all day. I was seconds away from opening it and handing them out to my coworkers myself when my boss quickly stopped me and told me to always bring the paychecks back to her office first. After learning this I decided to tell one of my other coworker about the situation. He said he knew too!! The reason he never said anything is because he doesn’t know the amount of…
Fired for having lunch…
Overheard in a place I’ve been temping (manager to casual employee): “I have some really bad news … it’s not working out for me .. you’re not working out for me. It’s a fast-paced environment and I’ve heard you being chatty. It’s not about being chatty. The past couple of days, you’ve come in, you’ve had lunch, you’ve been chatty, I’ve seen it and it’s not working out for me. We’ll pay you for this week but then no more, that’s it.” So many issues here! For context, it’s a cold-calling job … being chatty really helps you get past the first barrier of “fuck off if you’re selling something.” This dismissal should not have been done in front of co-workers. It should have been a private conversation. Having lunch is ok. Like, necessary-to-survive-and-be-productive ok. In most places I’ve worked, having lunch at the desk is ok; no one gives…
