Recently I moved states with my partner and was unemployed for about 3 months while I looked for work after the move. My previous position was remote, so I had time to develop a hobby of insect taxidermy. Sometimes I'd do skulls too, but mostly just insects. It was really fun, and I made small amount of cash on the side from selling on Etsy or to friends and family. Nothing to live off of by any stretch, but some welcome extra change. When I became unemployed I got some unemployment benefits and luckily had a bit of savings to go off of. It was tight but we made it work while I applied for and interviewed around. I obviously had a lot of extra time on my hands during this period and engaged more in my taxidermy hobby. I got really good at it and was making a decent…

How can I tell them I’m out?
I was just hired to work for a company that boasts a “people-first” environment, which was appealing and one of the reasons I accepted the position. However, after only working here for a week and a half, I'm starting to realize it isn't a good fit. I hold two MBAs, one of which has a concentration in Project Management. Three weeks have passed between my accepting the offer and onboarding with this company. After orientation, they didn't have a project placement for me, so they stuck me with a group that desperately needed someone. I've had a few meetings with the team, and it sounds like they just want me to take meeting minutes for their multiple 2-3 hour back-to-back meetings. They wanted me to jump right in and start taking notes for a meeting they've had weeks to prepare for in a sector that I know NOTHING about. So…
So I work for a brewery in Colorado. About 6 months ago I was thrusted into the head brewers position as the previous one went MIA. It’s been a ton of work. I usually work 7 days a week under the impression of making sacrifices to catch up on beers that were lost in the transition of brewers. Part of those sacrifices were that I didn’t get a raise to compensate me for all the extra work. At first I didn’t mind. I see the numbers of the brewery and knew I had to put up with it for a short time. Fast forward to last week, during our all staff meeting with the owners..they announced that we’re getting back on track and blah blah blah. Then he goes on to mention me (trying to sound like a shoutout) but embarrassed me in front of the whole staff that I…
I used to hold a job that paid $21-$24 last year but now looking at the same exact position they are paying $16-$19! I noticed this for other jobs where they used to pay a salary of $75,000-$85,000 but bumped it down to $65,000. Are they trying to drive down wages?
House of Cards will fall down soon
During my experiences in the UK, US, Germany and some other “more western” countries i've made pretty much a similar experience i want to share. Most companies are hardly giving the younger generation any possibility to become professionals in a field and often hiring people around the age of 40+ to bring in years of experience already. In the same time the younger generation is framed as “lazy” or “having unreal expectations regarding the job market”. Most of this countries share the same problem: “Becoming a nation of the old” – lower birthrates and a lot of young people not considering to even set a child in this world, facing birth and kid-unfriendly environments they don't want to raise children in. Often planning for a child also means a guaranteed devaluation and impoverishment. In the same time political decisions (not only regarding worker rights, but also education etc.) are forced…
So as someone who's the only one in the entire organization doing the type of work that I do, my manager asked me to get help from the “automatization team” to help creating tools and interfaces that helps simplifying what I do and hopefully when the team grows larger, we'd have people hop in and start using the tools right away and cut the time on training and operation. The idea was genuine and my manager was supportive. I coordinated the first project that we had on the agenda, and it was so successful, and I was praised so much, to the point that top management in the company (one step above my manager) thought I “was sharing too much sensitive information and critical knowledge specific to our team that should be contained within the team wherein you work,” literal word for word what I was told about a month…
I accidentally broke the text message screen shot rule on my previous post. Rule #9. Sorry about that mods. But had an interview today scheduled for 0930. I arrived at 0915. Waited until 0955 before I left. Got a text from the employer at 1015 saying “they are just now available for the interview”. I rescinded my application with no second thought. I would have waited and stayed before but not now. Know your worth everyone make these employers respect your time and effort and most Importantly you as a person.
TLDR company didn’t give me my raise while on maternity leave. I work in the healthcare industry. By American standards, the health system I work for has a nice parental leave package. Every year we receive our “bonuses” in the form of a 1% raise on our paychecks. This is followed by yearly merit raises to account for inflation. When I returned to work, raises had just been handed out. There was some discontent on the fairness of pay. Some received upwards of 8% raises while others only received 2%. When I reviewed my pays-lips I had not received any raise other than the 1% bonus from the first of the year. I had been gone on maternity leave since November and had just returned in March (a day early because my boss struggles with her boss duties). I did my quartet self check in and waited. Several pay cycles…
Is LinkedIn worse than real life?
This has always been my impression. I'm gonna start looking for a new job and I'm considering simply walking around town finding places, instead of using LinkedIn. Something just feels… off about that social media.
