Two days rest isn’t enough.
What idiot decided that you have to work five days then only have two days off a week? Then I just laugh when management asked why we are all looking exhausted and not being productive. Well. Maybe it’s cause I have zero time to recoup from the previous week. Then work gets pushed off if I need to take an extra day off to get caught up on rest and/or personal life things. I’m so sick of being forced to work my life away.
For context, I submitted my PTO for late July for 2 weeks. I am a manager that gets paid $20.50 hourly to manage 25 people. They never told me about this policy of not being allowed to take time off between May 29th to September 4th. I scheduled coverage for those two weeks so I am not leaving them hanging without another supervisor with extra staff in case a team member needs to take sick days. I would never deny my employees their time off like this regardless of this policy.
How common is this in other workplaces? I'm in Portland, Oregon, US. My company requires that if you some of your 40 Oregon Sick Leave (OSL) hours, and you're out of accrued company sick pay, that you must spend vacation hours to cover that day. I'm sure this is legal, but it seems problematic. I had to use two weeks of medical leave earlier in the year, so I ran out of sick pay, and now if I call out sick again, they require me to spend my OSL and burn my vacation hours. If you have already spent your OSL, they all you to take Medical Leave or unexcused absences unpaid. I submitted a request to update this policy through the proper employee suggestion website they have set up, and I emailed our admin/HR pointing out that this policy seems problematic – discouraging people from calling out to save…
