Workplace disrespects the death of a manager

I just wanted to share this story because it's been 2 months and I'm still not nearly close to being over it. My manager (a high-ranking manager in a high-end food service company) died from a heart attack two months ago. He was 38 and left behind a wife and a 1.5 year old daughter. Everyone at work was devestated. He was loved by everyone, and some of the workers were even childhood friends of his. He was always helping wherever he could and made sure everyone was feeling well, and we used to sit together and hang out after work as one big group. We all loved him deeply. He died on a day we weren't working, and the direct instructions we were given that night were: “Come in early tomorrow, just open your work station. We will have a shuttle that will take whoever's interested to his funeral.…

Just started my “remote” job…get told I have to go into an office hours away

I'm so mad I made an account just to rant about this. I just started a new job which was advertised as remote. The job posting said remote, and the description did not say anything at all about going into an office at any point or about travel. The contract I signed was the same. I did 3 interviews, and at no point did anyone say anything about going into an office. This was fully represented as a completely remote position, which is why I turned down other job offers to take it. I just started the job and am now being told that I will be required to travel to an office which is 2-3 hours away from me depending on traffic 3 times a year, and potentially out of state occasionally. Wtf? At first after being told I'd be needing to go into the office for a training…

Boss wants me to attend a mandatory unpaid meeting at a location an hour away from my work and threatens to fire me if not.

My boss at a vape store really wants me to come to a meeting every first Sunday of the month after a 10 hour shift. Unpaid for time. Uncompensated for gas. To a location almost an hour and a half away from my store. I am an hourly employee , is this even legal under the FLSA?? Best part is the meeting is 15 minutes long, I spend 50$ in gas for this…… he said bad things are gonna happen if I don’t go. This job sucks.

Economic Endgame: What gives?

My wife and I often take long walks and get frustrated seeing near million dollar houses in our neighborhood. To be clear it’s a cookie cutter neighborhood in the suburbs. The houses are hastily (and in some cases crappy built) that are nice but should only realistically be around 250-320k. Along with inflation this is happening EVERYWHERE. Affordability is disappearing despite degrees; having a good job and living a less than flashily lifestyle. All the while, the rich and ultra-rich get richer and any raise we get is immediately swallowed up by manufactured inflation (greedflation). How does this all end. What is the endgame??

The restaurant industry doesn’t care

This happened years ago but I read an article recently and it made me think of this. I worked at a strip mall for a cellular company. The job wasn’t bad and there were a lot of good food options which I enjoyed. One of those places was called the Tilted Kilt. The Tilted Kilt is a national chain having restaurants scattered across the country. Their hook is having attractive waitresses dressed in a plaid kilt and a matching bra. Think Hooters with Irish/Scottish twist. Anyways, this restaurant has been a part of our strip mall for almost 9 years. Their food was decent and it always seemed fairly busy when I ordered carry out for lunch. St. Patrick’s day came and Tilted Kilt went all out. I’m talking live bands, ice luges, multiple vendors, the whole nine yards. From what we were told, they went all hands that day…

I walked out from an 8 year bartending job

I love this bar. I've worked here for 8+ years. It's a beer and shot bar with regulars type of place. I'm friend's with the owners. We've had our ups and downs that escaladed but we've always worked through it. I have 1 shift every other Saturday. Tonight was slow for a Saturday so when my barback asked if he could sleep in later I told him no big deal he could take the night if he wanted to. Fast forward an hour, the bar had about 20 people and nothing insane. Once I covered my customers I went out for a cigarette. Of course some kid walks in right as I light the damn thing and so I figure he can wait 4 drags. In that time the owner sees a customer not being helped, loses her shit about where's the fucking bartender. I come in as she handed…

Boss hired inexperienced relative for management position

I have been in a management position myself for years at this company, with a few small raises a long the way. Recently we needed to add a new manager for a new department. This position was basically promised to one of our best employees who ultimately didn't get the position based on the lack of experience in management. This was strange and disappointing since we already discussed that we would give this employee a shot in that position. What came next baffled me. My boss suddenly hired a close relative to fill in the position because that person had no current job. This was announced to me when this person was already hired. This person has no experience in this field or an office job, no real experience in management or even with computers. Sending two emails literally takes this person half a day. Not only is this a…

A Serious Call to Action

I have read enough complaining and bickering, and I must speak out. As a member of the “Post Boomer” generation, we need to decide if we are willing to find common ground as a multigenerational group who, without question, decide to take collective and decisive action against the Baby-Boomer generation, stop complaining unless we can provide, or are open to solutions to our complaint, and acknowledge that our geriatric government, BOTH RED and BLUE, has made us indentured servants to their “wealth” plantation. How can we equal the playing field? Please understand that these recommendations will have both positive and negative consequences. Unfortunately, the generation that coasted under government subsides (whether you like it or hate it – they benefited from a form of socialism…), generated wealth and equity that, unless action is taken, will never be an option for us, nor will we inherit this accumulated wealth, and finally,…

My employer would take from our paychecks or straight up demand cash when the register was short.
