An email I received from the chair of the committee to the kids club I work at. The issue we the staff are facing, working for a not-for-profit, is that the club turned a profit enough to give all staff 10% but the committee won't budge on 5%. This has upset the older, longer term staff with mortgages and such. The younger staff probably noticed none of this before this email was sent out, and 50% of the staff are new 17/18 years from the last year. EMAIL Firstly, thank you again for the fantastic work you do to make ******* what it is. We know that the demands on staff are increasing including support for children attending the setting with additional needs, support for children post pandemic, and the potential impact of the Club growing further. We are writing to follow up on the 5% pay rise announced recently…

An example of why unions are important
Not going into too many details here as I currently work at this company. Company carried out a “wage review” and after a year concluded 4% was the best offer. They also tried to sneak through a 75% reduction in car allowance payments (car travel is essential for the role) and removal of hybrid working to “fund” this, resulting in a considerable number of employees actually losing money from it. Union held a ballot and it was rejected by around 80% of staff. Forced the company to remove the parts they tried to sneak through. Don’t let anyone tell you unions aren’t worth the money.
Not allowed to wear masks
Got an email today from HR saying we are NO LONGER ALLOWED to wear masks at work. We work in the travel industry. We work closely with cancer patients and people going in for surgeries. We are next to a hospital. Is this something they can do? And if I have a doctor's note for wearing one, can they deny that?
What options do I have?
Let me just say I’m sorry for the formatting. I’m doing this on mobile. Two years ago I accepted a promotion at work, that came along with a bump in pay, and a 10k bonus every year. As long as we met our company goals, and I met my personal goals. One year ago, we were bought out by a big private equity company, and all of a sudden this year after meeting my personal goals, ensuring my department met their goals, the company meeting their goals. I didn’t receive my 10K bonus because and I quote “the company is struggling financially” and no one is getting bonuses. This is not true. I know for a fact because I work closely with the sales team that we had another record breaking year. (Our 5th year in a row of record breaking numbers, largely due to my teams work). To add…
I keep seeing posts about stuff like this and it's very frustrating and condescending. Sure if you're in the top 10% of earners and can drastically reduce or even eliminate your working hours and still have enough to live and retire then maybe you should reevaluate what your priorities are if you're a workaholic. But for the other 90% of us we often don't have a choice. Most people working long or a lot of hours do so because they have to to make enough to pay their bills and survive. It's like telling people to quit their second job or to stop turning hobbies into income. It's a very privileged and elitist approach to the situation. Until we get universal basic income or at least a living minimum wage tied to real inflation then this will likely always be the case for some people. Take a step outside your…
Ahh, sigh. Our HR isn’t real- it’s our office assistant. We literally outsource. But in talking with her recently, I brought up an incident last year where a supervisor (not mine) grabbed me by my wrist and dragged me into another room, as well as her touching me repeatedly despite me asking her not to. The first incident (when originally addressed) was brushed off by my previous boss, who has since left the company. I brought both instances up to my HR, and multiple staff members have as well after witnessing them. My HR said she wants to have a mediated discussion between me, said supervisor, and herself. I said I didn’t feel this was necessary as a 1:1, as this should be an overall staff discussion with re-establishing boundaries (it’s an ongoing issue with staff). She replied saying it’s not optional and I have to attend. I have no…
Capitalism, by Shel Silverstein
