My employer is evil
I've worked for a small company for two years. Two weeks ago I had a miscarriage and was out of work for a week. While I was out of work and in the hospital my employer called me several times, after the 4th or 5th call I answered, she told me she called to tell me how much pressure I was putting in my colleagues and that it was important that I know how my being out was stressing out everyone. After that call I was very upset, understandably and when I got back to work I asked to talk to her in private. When we got into the meeting she said she wanted to talk to me anyway and told me I was being demoted from a leadership position to underneath a colleague who has been at the company for less than 6 months. There is a popular meme I’ve seen here a few times about how a medieval peasant got more time off than you and it’s made me think. The true problems of work and equality of today stem from one source. That is the premise that our entire system is built on. The need for growth. So, I started working for this big company last year in the US (10k+ employees). I specifically applied for a WFH job opening, and everything has been great so far. As a software developer, I don't need to be on site, and actually can be more productive and organized when I work from home. This company is based in California, and I live in Ohio. Yesterday they sent out an email saying that there's a new policy that retroactively changes what was agreed upon, and requires all out-of-state employees to move to California, with very few exceptions. No moving expenses will be paid. Is this even legal? What should I do? I really like my manager, my coworkers and the job in general, but I can't relocate so easily for various family reasons. Any advice? Thanks!
