Started a new job last year in Ontario, Canada for marketing for a company. For a bit of context: I am very poor with bankrupt parents, no degree, and not much going for me. When I got a job that paid $24/h instead of my $19/h at a call centre job I REJOICED. It seemed sketch but I did it anyway. Lots was weird off the bat. I didn’t have a degree so I had no training but I was expected to learn on my own time. Not a huge deal, I did just that. I was lured in by the promise of making enough money and bonuses to buy a house. (My mom and I have been renting all our lives, my only life goal is to buy her a house and me one, too). But lots was pushed on me. Im marketing, social media, admin assistant, order fulfillment,…

Rant About Skeleton Crews
Hey guys I just needed to rant and get this off my chest because I'm so goddamn tired of these jobs treating us like robots. I'm on my break rn and I'm just… Genuinely wondering how the fuck my job is supposed to even function at this rate. Tomorrow, my department (I work in curbside @ a grocery store) only has one person opening, and then one person running the entire store until close. That's two people for the whole day. And at minimum we need one person in the back to fulfill orders and one person picking. How the fuck are we supposed to do either if there's only one person to cover an entire shift??? And my manager is so pissed off about it he's talking to our store director to quit. I wish I could just leave, but I don't have a car and there's no other…

Did I get swindled?
I just took a role as a school aide. When interviews took place I was told the pay would be 16-18 based on experience with benefits and paid holidays. Successfully did the interviews and got hired. When signing on boarding documents I didn’t see the pay rate or anything so I asked the principal what did her and the admin team decide on. She responded by saying all school aides start at 15. I took it anyway considering it comes with benefits and paid holidays. Fast forward to a week later, last night I was browsing through the payroll portal and realized that under my salary info it says 14 an hour because of no education. I graduated high school and am currently pursuing a bachelors (I have 79 credits). Where I live 14 is below the minimum wage which is 15. I feel really shocked and I’m not sure…
I recently started a seasonal summer position, because my usual position is not running for 3 months of the year. I got hired in and stated that my availability would be 8-5. They're trying to talk me into 6-12 (which the amount of hours doesnt bother me, I just cannot work at 6 am). How do I professionally say that I can't work at 6 am because I dont wanna get up that fucking early nor should I have to when I stated my availability.
I work in marketing, and I explained to him why I haven’t been able to hire copywriting help. I’m a copy editor, and I told him that copywriters and editors make an average of $50-$60K. He gave me this response and immediately tried to walk it back. Nevertheless, I see how I’m perceived at my job and I wanna GTFO. I have a big opportunity that may or may not happen; until then, I’m stuck here dealing with a narcissist nepo baby for a boss.
This was back in October. But it still bothers me. I had a severe relapse in self-harm and needed to get medical attention at the emergency department. There was a chance I'd be admitted either medically or for psychiatric reasons. So, I told my boss I might not be in the next day (I did get admitted, medically). He did first ask if I was okay. But immediately followed up with “Get your shift covered.” I reached out to a few coworkers, but couldn't find anyone to cover for me. And they hospital took my phone away (as they often do for psychiatric patients). The manager above me (not the boss who I originally contacted) covered my shift. I apologized for missing my shift when I returned, as I had only been at the job a few weeks and wanted to stay in good graces. And he told me “I…
Noam Chomsky on the Division of Labor Everybody reads the first paragraph of The Wealth of Nations where he talks about how wonderful the division of labor is. But not many people get to the point hundreds of pages later, where he says that division of labor will destroy human beings and turn people into creatures as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human being to be. And therefore in any civilized society the government is going to have to take some measures to prevent division of labor from proceeding to its limits. Selling out. Consider a craftsman who builds some beautiful thing. Humboldt says if he does it under external coercion, like pay, for wages, we may admire what he does but we despise what he is. On the other hand, if he does it out of his own free, creative expression of himself, under free…
During my hour break I like to close my eyes in the breakroom. Sometimes listen to music or youtube via earbuds othertime just meditate. Admittedly sometimes this does lead to a powernap, but at the same time no one minds. Today a manager came in to get coffee, I assume. Saw me and said that this is work and not your house and that I don't have any business taking a 'nap.'
