A line from “The Menu”

Mild spoilers for the movie The Menu, made me laugh out loud and think of this subreddit. A scene where Killer is asked by a woman (a seemingly innocent bystander) to explain why she's going to be killed. What school did you go to? “Brown” Student loans? No. I'm sorry, you're dying.

New age job?

I quit my job a month ago exactly, and moved back to the small town I came from. My friends and the community has rallied to get me back to myself again. I am an electrician by trade and for those of you that don’t know the trade, we are exposed to everything. rude customers people who don’t pay. Mother Nature, the extreme hot and cold weather. And a lot of us don’t get benefits. We aren’t provided health insurance. No work gear to bare the hot and cold. No boots no sweat shirts no rain jackets. We aren’t supplied tools. All of that comes out of our pockets. Because of this It’s been really hard to ever want to go back. Over 15 years I’ve learned the skill, I’ve paid my dues but with no one wanting to join the electrical community, because of what I stated above. I…

Demolition/Renovation in dated work building. Other floor sent home but not mine. Asbestos risk?

First of all, this post is definitely venting, but I am also seeking perspective and advice. My workplace is in an old building constructed circa 1950 and the bathrooms and hallway ceilings on all floors are being remodeled through the end of the year. The bathrooms, at least, are entering ADA compliance. We received emails describing basic plans and timelines last month, but I didn't think I'd be in a construction zone. I watched roof construction from a window months ago and remembered being glad it wasn't me breathing that dust. There is perceptible dust coming from the bathrooms that has already caused asthma flareups in a coworker just from sitting at their desk. Personally, I've been working remotely since the demo crew got to my floor because of an upper respiratory infection, so I haven't been in the thick of it. A more recent email last week after work…

10 days of work

Hi everyone, i’ve recently completed 10 days of work from 8am with a half hour to an hour commute before and after. I had one day off in between (that i had to beg for) and two days right after. However, i’m still incredibly exhausted. I feel like it’s not valid tho bc everyone who works at this damned company doesn’t understand what exhaustion is. My bosses work 7 days a week 24 hours a day (but they’re not in the office everyday like us). i’ve been here a bit over a year and i can’t explain how burnt out i am. i’m running on fumes and i don’t even feel like it’s valid. my mental health is so bad. i don’t have pto just sick days that i’m trying to spread out for separate recovery days that they’re not giving me. I dread going into the office and i’m…

No more “franchises”

I think we are hitting that point where the wave crashes. The franchise system doesnt work. The “franchise fees” are the reason they cant pay employees, the food sucks to begin with (the only reason anyone goes to franchises was cause it was ok food for cheap) now the prices are outrageous. Lets just get rid of them? Id rather pay LITERALLY the same amount to get an entree at a restaurant. (Before you respond, look at a foot long at Subway, or “meal deal” at ANY fast food joint and compare that price and post the price) Its time to end the franchise model.

As AI continues to develop at lighting speed, while it’s been gaining more and more popularity, I can’t help but think – are we going to see more jobs created or will this truly be catastrophically disruptive to our already dysfunctional economy?

It's been interesting seeing everyone I know start to play with this Pandora's box, myself included, not fully grasping the fact that it's only going to exacerbate our already upside-down relationship between work and reward in our society.

Let go because “not a good cultural fit” but..

Originally when I was hired, I felt I had been head hunted – they seemed to already understand my experience and level of knowledge and wanted to sell the job to me. During training, everything was fine and they even considered suggestions I made. Over the weeks, I met new coworkers and seemed to be able to get along with most, if not all of them, to some degree of friendliness. I was informed that they were hiring new staff because a long time employee quit and the owners wanted more time with family. Eventually, I discovered they were going on a week long vacation in mid-April but thought nothing of it. In this time, I performed the job to the best of my abilities, educated customers and staff, kept on top of inventory and cleaning duties that were being looked over, showed up on time everyday and extended hands…

Had a mental breakdown today and need to vent

Hello, first time poster long time lurker and big time supporter. Compared to others, I may get laughed at because I’m 100% wfh but just wanted to gouge how many others are in the same boat. I’m in insurance claims which deals with a lot of litigation that makes up a quarter of my overwhelming current large pending. I would give more details but I think I can be easily identified by my company given my unique duties and types of claims I handle as I suspect someone from there is sneaking around in these types of forums. Anyway, I looked at the department roster from a few years ago and to now, it’s almost 50% less than what it was and don’t think they hired anyone since the pandemic which means anytime someone quits, their case load and files get thrown onto the rest of us left. During this…
