Hey Lumen Technologies: Are you okay with abusing your employees to the point where their entire lives revolve around agonizing over your company? Is that your “business model”? To carve out your employees’ sense of wellbeing and identity until they basically get Stockholm’s Syndrome for your company and they’re too exhausted to look for a way out? I understand now, more than ever before, why so many people loathe CenturyLink. And Lumen Technologies. And every other company like them.

My boss just sent me these messages over the Shyft app in a group of about 8 others. none of the other employees in the group have been there longer than a few months. “No need to respond to this but just fair warning as you are each part of the newest team members and since I don't see all of you often this is the easy way to communicate. be aware that IF you are caught discussing your rate of PAY with anyone at the store outside of the mgt team it is grounds for automatic termination. this is not something you should every share at a job. this is just a warning as it was brought to my attention that it's happening in my store.” next message: “please like this message so I know your aware and understand” I got this message a couple of days…

Ever since I was a kid me and my siblings were absolutely convinced that either we'd get rich, by playing professional sports, becoming a rockstar, or acting in a billion dollar movie. As I got older this idea continued to penetrate my subconscious, even as I write this I still have it in the back of my mind that I might become rich and won't need to worry about any of the world's problems. It doesn't matter that the odds are stacked against me, or that I don't have the money or resources needed to even get started in one of these fields. For some reason, I continue to sort of believe it. Why does this myth persist? Is it because of the rags-to-riches narrative that's so common in movies and books? It’s not like I don’t want to work at ALL in life I just want to find something I enjoy. I work a lot. I work days and nights, Monday to Friday and Saturday’s. At the SAME job. I dislike my job. I’ve been applying to jobs everyday hoping something else comes up, and I do delivery driving on the side so I’m not lazy by any means, I clean houses and residential buildings and sometimes it’s a lot. I get exhausted physically and mentally and today my boss kind of guilt tripped me and was rude and sarcastic for calling off for my 5-9 pm shift after working 9-3. I guess 4 others called in as well.. but that’s not my issue? I do not want to clean all day then clean all night it is not an easy job and it’s definitely not the best pay either for…
