Why some US workers may never speak out against employers

“Nobody wants to work anymore/young people are lazy” Rant

I typed this up during the holidays (written on Nov. 27, 2022) and planned to share my work experience so far so you could reference this to stubborn family members who insist “this generation just doesn't want to work these days”. Life got busy so here it is now. Anecdotes only go so far but I know y'all will resonate with it. I started working when I was 17 at a daycare part-time while in high school. I was very lucky to start at $15/hr. I kept that job for two summers after finishing HS while attending college. By the end of my time there, my pay was increased to $17/hr. In college I picked up a student job on campus at the library. While working part-time at the library, and attending classes as a full-time student, I also worked at 2 unpaid internships relevant to my degree. In…

Never been more excited to write a letter of resignation

I have been the team lead in a wet lab (microbiology) for years. I'm great at my job and in essence I do love the work itself, but the field is so toxic. My workplace gives the guise of a work-life balance in the form of a 7.5-hour day, but they also refuse to adequately staff and basically require overtime daily, so we're lucky if we get to leave after 8 hours. The standard day is closer to 9 or 10 hours. My boss brushes this off as “the grass is always greener on the other side” when we say we need more staff and as team lead I'm encouraged to tell staff they're wrong when they criticize company practices or standards even though I'm suffering the workload just as much, if not more, than they are. The work is constant and overbearing; some days we don't get a chance…

My parents are finally seeing the truth

It sucks, because this is not the way i wanted it to happen but my parents are finally seeing the truth about how disposable the working class is to the elite. Today my mom got the notice, that she and her friend at work would be pitted against each other for who gets to keep their job. They were notified together, that they would both need to reapply and re interview and only one of them would keep their job and the other would be eliminated. The worst part? Both her and her friends divisions have made steady profits over the past 15 years. There is no logical reasoning behind this, her boss just told her they were cutting costs. My mom has been with this company since 1988, fresh out of college. A total of 35 years with them and she is now told that she will need to…

Thread about antiwork “start a business” “get a better job”

I should be smart enough to expect this kind of stupidity, but it still dumbfounds me everytime. The fact that not everyone can own a business is SUCH a simple concept. It cant work for countless reasons. These people and the “get a better job” people somehow don’t understand that if you leave a job that doesn’t pay enough, someone else is still gonna have to work that job, AND NOT GET PAID ENOUGH. They think it’s an individual issue and completely ignore that we care about OUR FELLOW WORKERS, it’s not just about one person being able to get a better job or not. There is a systemic problem of greed and exploitation, one person improving their own life doesnt solve the LARGER ISSUE. There’s a million things i could say here but ima just stop, ik yall get it. It’s so frustrating that people don’t understand that we…

So this is a little different

So I'm in a tough situation that I've never been in and don't know what to do. I'm currently a recruiter that makes 18/hr, I love my job for the most part, manager sucks, but they are working on fixing it. The drive is only 10 minutes. I accepted a job offer with a state farm agent on Monday that pays 38k salary. I had to pay 150 to start my certification, and I don't think im getting that back. It's also 30 minutes away from home. But the people seem nice, but I have to sell insurance. Well the job I put my 2 weeks in says they are extending a better offer to me tomorrow. I already accepted the offer, but might need yo turn it down for more money. Who do I chose?

I was fired during my two week notice of my resignation.

I was working for this car wash company, not specifying further, for over a year. It would've been two years in May. I put in my two weeks notice of my resignation on March 16th due to the fact that I got a job offer from a certain hospital and I had the mentality that I was going to continue my same level of work, so I could leave on good terms with my current employer and so I wouldn't stress out my coworkers because even though I was leaving I still cared about them. Fast forward to yesterday. I had been called into the office at the start of my morning shift at 7:00 AM by my GM (general manager) who wasn't scheduled to open with me. He sits me down and tells me that I'm being “let go early”. The reasons being extended bathroom breaks, which have NEVER…

I won’t be getting paid this week.

I work as a machinist for a small company. I’ve been employed here for close to 4 years now and I need to get the fuck out. We only have 6 people on the floor and we are required to keep track of time spent per job each day and turn the sheets in every Tuesday before noon. The sheets are purely for data collection and we’ve been doing them for over a year now. I’m the only person in my department and I was overloaded with emails, running machines, and just all around doing my job and didn’t turn my sheet in. I’ve only ever had this happen once before when we first started this process and I didn’t get paid like I should have. Tomorrow I’m going to make an attempt to be reasonable but I think I’ll just clock out and leave if they don’t agree to…

Man fired for not being “fun enough” at work, sues company, and wins.

https://www.euronews.com/next/2022/11/30/a-french-man-has-won-the-right-not-to-be-fun-at-work-in-a-landmark-court-battle This man is a HERO. Lol. I’m so proud of him for sticking up for himself. It is insane how much workplaces want to extract from you FOR FREE. I hope he gets the full compensation for being fired for such a frivolous reason.
