I started applying for jobs recently. I’ve been with the same company for 5 years. Started my current role a year ago and while I’m not completely unhappy, I feel like I am worth more and can be making more money. I got all the way to the references stage for one job after interviewing with 9 different people and taking a day off work to meet with some of them in person. It was down to me an one other candidate, and they said they were trying to get approval to hire us both but when that fell through they hired the other person. Annoying but what are ya gonna do. I got all the way to the references stage with another position, and then I was told that my references weren’t good. I wasn’t given any further information as references are considered confident info. I’m just confused because…

Is my old job being petty?
So, i worked at a place I hated for a few months and recently got a better job. Recently enough that I'm still getting a paycheck or two (because schools are really shitty at payroll in a timely fashion). Anyways, I get a call from the school and they're telling me they screwed up when cutting a final check and they overpaid me by under 50 bucks (apparently some kind of miscommunication about deductions that I was/was not paying into after I had left employment with them). School wanted me to verify the info they had on file (I specifically did not verify, I danced around it). Told them that I haven't had any issues on my end getting my payroll deposited. They further say that usually banks just help them out with this, but my bank wouldn't authorize their deduction. They mentioned something about the posting date and then…
A few months ago I was in such a dead end and underpaid job that I could barely afford to eat and pay my bills. Since then I did find a new position with slightly better pay and a lot better of a company culture. While I can pay all of my bills, there really isn’t anything left over to put towards savings. How is anyone supposed to save up for a down payment on a property? I’m not even talking about a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom white picket fence house I’m just talking about any sort of property that I can call my own and I don’t have landlords intrusively letting themselves in whenever they feel like it or dreading to see how much my rent has increased when I need to resign my lease. I’ve seen advice like “go get a college degree” but does anyone know how…
I've been paralyzed with anxiety over this for a while and I wanna know if I'm being unreasonable. I'm trying to figure out what profession I want to do with my life but it feels like every single one in the U.S. is being subjected to insane hours for low pay at the moment. I don't wanna be filthy rich, I just want to be comfortable. Is it reasonable for me to just work 40 hours a week and be done at that and is it reasonable for me to turn down jobs that don't see it that way? I don't mind working the very occasional overtime but I hear with some places it's utterly constant and I don't wanna be trapped in infinite 60 hour workweeks.
Pay raise comes with strings attached.
A friend/former coworker works as a nurse at a long term care facility. She has worked there since it opened about 15+ years ago. Recently she saw an ad online advertising they were hiring nurses, the hourly pay was mentioned in the ad, which is WAY more than she is currently making. When she started, the pay was low to begin with, and their yearly “raises” are less than $1/hour, so you can imagine that she’s not making all that much. Fast forward to a few weeks later, she goes to the nursing supervisor to ask for a raise to match what was in the ad. Supervisor firsts tells her, it’s against policy to discuss pay, to which she explained she saw the ad. Then Supervisor tells her if she wants to make X dollars an hour, she needs to quit and reapply, with NO guarantee that she will be…
