I guess I wasn’t sure what subreddit to ask this in, but essentially it’s just what the title says. My employer sent out an email last night showing us how to set up a hotspot to connect to the POS to process sales if our internet goes down (apparently it’s been happening a lot in many stores?). They said this is so we “don’t inconvenience the customer”. They said that we would still be able to expense any data overages, but it doesn’t feel right. We had a meeting about it today and I got too nervous to say anything, but is this legal as per Canadian labour laws? I really don’t feel comfortable using my personal phone (which they do not pay for) to process customer sales on the POS. Not to mention isn’t this a huge security risk since hot spots are not secure at all? It wasn’t…
Category: Antiwork
I haven’t worked for many medium sized companies, they’ve either been small mom and pop where the owner wasn’t a piece of shit and actually showed up and cared, or a government contractor mega corporation as toxic as can be, but from my collection of information CEOs are the ones that go M.I.A, ya know, off to one of their three vacation homes to be alcoholics and send emails about their grand ideas and input on how to not actually advance their company and take the biggest piece of the pie while doing virtually nothing resembling work. I work for a medium size robotics company that was purchased out last year, and the owner and CEO was supposed to make his quarterly visit today in from his vacation house in Florida, but ya know, he’s “sick”.
Teaching them early
My daughter's elementary school doesn't have art classes. (The district doesn't actually have any art classes before high school level). So I started an after school art class/ club, where I teach them a little about technique and such, tying the lesson in with the calendar. So last week we celebrated Cesar Chavez day (our neighborhood has a highway named for him on the edge). I found a few short educational videos about his life and work, and we made our own “unions”- the folded up paper chain people holding hands. (I used the library rolls to get reallllly long sheets so they could have a lot of people in their unions!) I explained to them that by standing together, they can make the world a better place for themselves and their children, just like he did. It's not much but hopefully a few of them will remember!

Automotive tech looking for new work
Currently work in a small mom and pop shop. We stay quite busy, won't get into boring details, but want to move on to a different shop. Started looking on indeed, to my surprise many many places looking for all levels of techs, small shops, large shops, corporate owned shops, dealerships, everywhere! But here's the thing, every shop expects you to have all your own tools, no problem, whatever I don't have which isn't much I'll get off whatever tool truck comes thru. That alone is a few thousand dollar investment that I have been working on for years. You never have every tool you need and they break all the time. I've had 2 interviews, about to go to a 3rd in 2 hours. 1st interview offered me $16.50 an hour. 2nd place offered my $17. I can make more flipping burgers or door dashing, gtfo. If people complaining…
Found this a bit interesting. My work place is not allowing us to take sick time for a sick child. If you are staying home due to a child's sickness we are required to take vacation time. I'm wondering if this is because they pay out vacation time end of year and not sick time. They changed our handbook policy on sick time as well. They also have the canned company response about you can't talk about salary but added. My work place has treated me fairly the last few years, so I won't make a big stink about it but not letting us take sick time if we have to stay home with sick child feels wrong.
