Why is he allowed to do this?
Yes, the US needs workers to strike. Absolutely. For a lot of reasons, and it would do a lot of good. But we've got a ways to go before we even can. There are other things that need to happen first because the reality right now is: WE AREN'T CAPABLE OF IT (yet). Striking is a literal impossibility and is, without exageration, near or actual suicide for too many. And that is the bigger problem at the moment. Most people, the ones who really need the results of a strike, can't because of 5 combined reasons: 1) Much of the US is employed in such a way that if we strike, we WILL lose our job. And findng a new job is A LOT easier said than done these days. 2) health insurance is tied to your job. Lose your job and you lose your health insurance. Can't get meds…
I work at a busy plasma center. Now we do have some management issues and favoritism, but thats not the main reason I'm quitting. I'd like to quit because of my health. I need hip surgery soon and I've been in extreme pain doing the plasma phlebotomist gig. Never a moment to sit down and take a pain breather. I spoke with my doctor and she wrote a note recommending part time employment due to health issues. I brought it to my employer, who sort of snubbed their nose at it and just said “Well see”. So I think I'd like to put in my two weeks and just focus on college. Does anyone have any good, proper advice for quitting and not burning bridges?
should i come to my work?
So about three weeks ago my employer rolled out the work schedule for next week. I stupidly forgot to fill out my availability and as a result, he planned me in on a saturday and a monday, days on which I usually never work but whatever. I immediately texted him saying I cannot work both of these days and that i forgot to fill out my availability. To this he responds that I have to find someone to substitute for me. So I tried doing this. For the monday I got a substitute. It is now three weeks later and I still haven't found a substitute for me. So I asked whether I could work on friday (because they are understaffed that day as well) instead of on saturday. Employer says no, because they need me more on saturday. all right. Now I'm left with the option of still going…
Rant: just because I am a younger/newer professional does not mean that my groceries & rent are ANY cheaper than a seasoned professional… I’m sick of that excuse to pay me WAY less. I am in student loan debt to work this “professional” job. Why are you lowballing me because I’m a young woman? Also- my masters degree cost so much more than my older coworkers did..
He also said, “feel free to send us the funeral home notice.” Do I really need proof that my grandfather just died. Like come on, seriously? Edit: Let me add that he did say he’s “sorry to hear that” before saying the other stuff, but still.
Context: I work in a healthcare facility. Our washer and dryer have been out for months and our boss refuses to do anything about it. Meanwhile he completely remodeled the outside courtyard of the building. Me: This not having proper washing facilities is becoming a real problem. Survey is coming and because we don’t have replacement fitted sheets some of our patients are opting to lay on wet sheets over being on a bare mattress. It’s isn’t a decision they should have to make My boss: Thank you for checking (My name). I will be at the facility in person soon and we can resolve your concerns. When he got there he immediately suspended me for gross insubordination. No matter how good a facility may look on the outside just remember the people at the top don’t care about your families.
