Retaliation for complaint?
Background: I work as a front office supervisor in a hotel in downtown Chicago. About a month ago, I placed an official complaint on the property’s F&B manager for verbal harassment after he threatened me for withholding security keys to our back door. Recently, we had a dangerous encounter with a trespasser who made his way onto the guest floors and tried to break into some rooms. I was the one who caught him when I was doing a floor check. As he was being escorted off property, he mentioned he had a gun on him. This terrified me to my core and I think about this moment everyday I’m at work. My direct DOP made it very clear if I’m at work, the security keys are to be on my person and it is up to my discretion who gets the keys. This particular manager likes to sneak in…
Story Time: High level technical support contract for a federal agency. Started in 2016 and managed my entire region with only one guy helping helping me. My metrics put my region consistently in the top 80% of regions for my field of technical support. The other guy helped too. But ours was the only region with so few techs, most being staffed by teams of 4-7 people to balance the same workload. Mine was a position of respect and authority within my field and region, and while even then I was paid less than I believe my value was worth, the other benefits (which were later gutted) made it worthwhile to build a career there. In 2021 the contract went back up for auction, and the company currently in control put in an absurdly low bid, easily outstripping all the other companies bidding for the contract. Once the new contract…
How to quit.
Some years ago me and a friend had a job where we knew the salary and we were just going to give out phone cards for free. When we get there, there is 20+ people. They change the rules to lower our salary but the ones that give out the most/get the cards activated gets a bonus. I needed the money so i stayed anyway but i was angry. Ofc they knew the people they put in the most populated/crowded areas. Me and my friend were in a really bad neighborhood/ghetto and got tired of it. The second day i said F-it and told my friend we're leaving early. We took all the cards (maybe 2000-5000+, very heavy) and took a trip with the car, then we poured gasoline over them and restored our sanity. The company wanted us to return the cards that were not given out lol. With…

Context: my wife is a 5th grade English teacher in DC. She’s been dealing with burnout and after talking with me, her union rep, and her therapist, decided to scale back the amount of work she was doing for her school. Today her assistant principal met with her for 2 hours after classes today to discuss her performance. Among the quote above, claiming she had to do 20+ hours of work every week, the AP also mentioned that her students were suffering from her only doing work during work hours. This profession is toxic. Stay away.
