Using the unhoused as a prop to tell us how grateful we should feel

I was just in a work meeting and we were discussing a return to office. The mid-level manager at my company leading the meeting was talking all upbeat about how there was going to be a return to the office and how we should be happy about it. Then they said that if we didn't look happy they were going to take us across the street to the bus station and show us “homeless people” so that we could be appropriately grateful that we have a job, so that we can be happy about it. I'm literally so disgusted. Unhoused people as a prop to try and make their shitty policies more palatable to us is disgusting. Expecting me to perform happiness/gratefulness about this job that is pointless and doesn't contribute to society at all – WHILE they are grossly underpaying me for my skills is the worst. And then…

Ultimatum Performance Review

I started working for this start up, cloud based accounting firm about a year and a half ago as a client account manager for some pretty sizable companies. Our company went through rough transitions over the past year and its employees have had a high turnover rate due to stressful conditions and a chaotic work environment. I have been one of three who have stayed since the beginning after one employee quit last week. I have managed many clients and employees and have had a significant part in the improvement of the company. But today I had my performance review where they told me the board of directors wants to restructure ou company again and my position is being eliminated. I work at a toxic company that is built on micromanagement, narcissism, and leaders flying off the handle. I am in the final rounds of interviews and hoping to get out soon. For context: the company gives 5 sick days in a very high-COVID rate location. New policies include: – must request sick days in advance – if you are feeling sick or exposed to COVID, you have to use sick days and can’t work remotely. Some people wake up feeling slightly ill but can/want to/need to still work so they’d work remote those days, but now that’s not allowed. – no exceptions must be in office 3 days (I was given a valid acception but now that has been revoked and it shows that they do not care about my well-being whatsoever) – YOU MUST MAKE DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS ONLY ON REMOTE DAYS OR USE A SICK DAY IF ON…

Who do you think you are?

So my boss texted me just a while ago asking me if I would be back at work tomorrow after being out sick with the mild case of the flu, and I told him that I should be, but I would call him tomorrow morning to let him know. He texted back “That’s not going to work, I need to know by 5 tonight.” Who do you think you are? One, I don’t know how I will feel by tomorrow morning and two I told him he really needs to watch how he talks to people. I have another job lined up anyways so I’m leaving, but that just made me turn in my notice all the more sooner. I swear these people.
