Most satisfying resignation I’ll ever give

I started this job a year ago alongside another newbie, taking over from the 2 previous people who worked the role. The person I worked alongside quit after 3 months, right when our probations were due to end. My manager knew that I'd have to pick up her work load, but still insisted on extending my probationary period and prolonging my anxiety. A month later they found a replacement for her from another department, who they spent 2 months training until she quit. They passed my probation after 6 months, but for 9 months out of this year I've worked solo in a 2 person job. I've had a handful of 1 to 1's with my manager, who keeps bringing up the topic of workload and asking me for solutions. I've asked her, as my line manager, to pick up some of the task of tracking all the work we're…

i had to call off today and my boss, who’s normal always nice and sweet, seemed really irritated with me. i feel bad about calling out now.

i had to call off today because of a situation regarding the vacation i'm about to take (keep in mind, this is my first time taking a vacation in the almost two years i've worked there) and it literally came up last minute so i had no control over it. here's how the conversation went: boss: hello, this is (boss name) me: hi (boss name) it's OP. how are you? boss: i'm great OP, how are you? me: i'm alright. so listen, i just wanted to update you about the current situation i'm in. i unfortunately wasn't able to find somebody to cover my shift, and i am still not able to come in today, so i may just have to sit this one out today. i'm sorry. boss: awkward silence okay. thank you. me: thank you, have a good day. boss: yep. bye. this really bothered me because my…

Overqualified & miserable

I am overqualified for my job & miserable. Any advice? The job is easy. My boss is very easy going. There’s no tight deadlines. We can work at home some days & don’t face real penalties for being late to the office. I have great but expensive healthcare, ample vacation & sick time. However, the job is intended for high school graduates & pays as such. I have a bachelors degree. Everyone else with at least a bachelors degree earns 40,000$ more than me & has there own office. I am one of the lowest paid in the organization & just have a cubicle. I need more money, see below. My spouse is a first generation immigrant who mainly speaks Spanish, so it is hard for them to earn much. We have a 2 year old child. We live in an immediate suburb of one of the most expensive cities…

My background check for a new job is taking forever, I’ve already checked out of my current job, how do I deflect new projects?

I’m supposed to be starting a new job in two weeks contingent on my background check. Originally my background check was supposed to be ready this Friday but now it’s extended another week! I have zero concerns related to my background so I don’t understand what the issue is. I reached out to the recruiter this morning and am waiting a response. Anyway, my current job is trash. I’ve made so many posts about them in the past. They’ve screwed me over in the past due to THEIR financial problems. (Past as in like 4 months ago). They said everything was better, cool, great. Yesterday I find out they’re back in financial problems but worse and they gave me a “to do” list that’s 10 pages long. I’ve had this new job lined up for the last couple of weeks, I’ve signed all the paperwork but I can’t put in…

How can we make a change?

We have the power to do whatever we work towards. We are the many, not the few. We can fight for what we believe is right. But the question is, what is that thing we want to work towards? If we raise minimum wage, inflation is going to mark prices up, only the big corporations will be left, workers will get fired, and automation is going to be more commonplace. Then it almost seems we are worse than before. Obviously if this was an easy issue to solve, it would've been solved already. But I'm curious to hear some ideas from you guys. What do you believe might be a way to make minimum wage livable?

Showerthought: If “corporations are people too”, as conservatives claim, most of them would be diagnosed as sociopathic.

Why is office coffee always so bad?

Before the pandemic, I worked at an office alongside about 50 people. We had a coffee machine in the break room and the coffee was just atrocious. It always tasted bitter and burned. We would bring our own ground coffee but it didn’t fix it, so we just figured that coffee machine was bad enough where it’d turn any coffee into shit-tasting brew. We tried to give that feedback through the suggestion box and through office manager, but it never got better. We then went to be remote for the pandemic and I ended up leaving that job when they called us back into the office. My next job was fully remote, but I was expected to come to the head office across the country every few months or so. I make a trip there, the headquarters of a multi-billion dollar company, go to the break room, get some coffee…
