I found the onboarding paper of a company I joined in 1991. As an experienced machinist I started at $20.00 an hour. In NINETEEN NINETY ONE! At that time we had recently bought a house with 7 acres. Cost $125,000. A similar place today would run ~ $450,000 today. Looking for a machinist job currently, advertised pay is between $18 to $25 an hour. With some outliers higher, but more lower too. After years of training, thousands of dollars in precision tools and experience, and years of inflation, you are supposed to work at the around the same wages as THIRTY YEARS AGO! Housing has gone up 4 to 5 times what it was then, wages have barely moved. How the hell is a young person supposed to even start to live an independent life with prices like that. Federal Minimum wage was $4.25 Federal minimum today, $7.25 Total inflation…
Workers need to take the power back
Sorry To Keep Bothering You Guys
So yesterday I was let go for “falsely confirming appointments” at a medical clinic…not true but since we don't have individual IDs, I can't prove it. They are already threatening to keep my personal items and last check until mid March. Now the lady doctor is threatening me to sue if I don't remove a negative Google and Indeed review. Am I crazy or is she the crazy one?
I've been reading a lot of posts recently where employers are requesting staff provide doctors note for work absence. This is despite the fact that they are in hospital for things like miscarriages/serious injuries, or they are literally visibly sick at the workplace. And to put the icing on the cake, the complaining worker can't even afford to see a doctor. Is this a new trend, or has this always been a trick to abuse employees into asking them to do something they can't or don't even need to do in order to get them into trouble?
I work in a hospital. When we have big snow storms coming they will send out an email. They tell us to be safe traveling to and from work. “You are important to us”. They offer us to stay over night and sleep on an available bed if we have any to begin with. I can’t. I have kids at home. We had a snow storm by Christmas. I couldn’t leave my house. My car was iced to the curb and our road hadn’t been plowed or salted. On top of that I have to take hills to get there. I unfortunately don’t have a car made for them and 99% of the time can’t get up them if they are covered. If I was a medical professional I would have definitely tried harder. I do registration. Half of my dept was snowed in. After telling my boss I couldn’t…
What can be done in this case?
My daughter just graduated from college in December and has applied for weekend work to make her new meet. A restaurant asked her to come in and will pay $10-11.25. She went and they made copies of her driver’s license and social security card and had her train and do tasks while there. The next day she gets a text saying they don’t have anyone to train her, and that she won’t be paid because they didn’t hire her. She not so much worried about the pay but feels this is unjust. While she was there, an employee walked out and is being hired back.
I had recently posted on social media about receiving a written notice for attendance due to a medical issue. All my mangers were aware of me having bad nerves in my tooth and were trying to give me advice and doctors. I took two days off and was told I should give a doctors note. Well i don’t have insurance and get paid minimum wage so I couldn’t afford a doctors note, only the root canal. I informed my managers and came to work everyday in pain until my appointment since the attendance was becoming an issue. So I posted that my job can kiss my ass and I’ll quit with laughing emojis (clearly joking with who i thought was just my facebook friends) and they had high expectations with minimal pay on my private facebook. It was accidentally made public (on the story part) however I never posted my…
No wonder people don’t wanna work
Hey there! I'm new to this subreddit and I have a story. I (F23) am looking for a new job. I applied to an insurance company and got a phone call from the owner….only he didn't call my cell number, he called my job. He claims he didn't see my cell number on my indeed resume, so I gave him my cell number and said that's the best way to reach me. He asked what my work hours are, he said he'd call me later to schedule an interview. I didn't get a call back. The next day, i hadn't heard anything. I was out with my husband and a few friends, when around 8pm, my phone starts ringing. It wasn't a number I recognized and I answered the call. Wouldn't ya know, it's the owner of the insurance company, calling to schedule an interview, he says “hey, is it…
