As someone who has experienced both blue-collar and tech jobs, I have seen firsthand how layoffs can profoundly impact workers. My transition from blue-collar work to technology was motivated by the hope of avoiding the instability and uncertainty that came with frequent layoffs. However, as I have come to learn, no industry is immune to the forces of change, and the tech sector is no exception. In recent years, society has sold technology as the promised land, a sector that would be immune to the forces that plagued other industries, including offshoring and automation. This idea was reinforced by the rapid growth of the tech industry, which created new jobs faster than other sectors. However, recent layoffs have shattered that illusion and shown that the tech industry is not immune to the forces of change. The current round of layoffs in the tech sector is driven mainly by the rapid…

Increased salary due to inflation?
I am wondering how many of you got a higher salary due to inflation. My company has been “considering” it since last August. Inflation rate 16.2%.
Landlord sucks/Is this allowed?
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but basically title. A bit of background, my girlfriend and I moved into an older apartment building last summer (out of necessity and it was cheap ~8XX/month). Upon moving in, we found the landlord had not had a chance to update the unit (we were told it's been years since someone lived in this unit). When we first came, we had to do a thorough cleaning of dust and cobwebs (not ideal since I have asthma, but we powered through). Ever since we have moved in, there have been nothing but problems. My girlfriend and I started keeping a list for legal purposes: The front door doesn’t unlock sometimes bc it gets jammed. The key is also so old that we cannot have it replicated (we tried several places), so one of us pretty much as to be home…
Plain and simple. You aren’t required to provide full-time employees insurance, or any benefits. Employers can deduct from your wages nearly at will. There’s nothing you can do about it. The cost of living is so high and wages are so low. Why the fuck do people live there?
Hello! I trusted her and I did that but she treated me very poorly and still I was given 12-15hrs a week, when again, I was hired as full time. All of a sudden, I saw that I was removed from the schedule for last week and I was confused so I messaged her because I wanted to know my schedule and she told me that she's training a bunch of other employees and she straight…

Not because I’m too dumb or too lazy or anything like that. I have great scores and a great work ethic when given the opportunity. Just bad luck. The wrong family. The wrong parents. The wrong income bracket. Etc. Yes, miracles can happen. But society is designed to keep you in the economic bracket where you started, or worse. I’m trying to come to terms with this and what it means. Why are our futures and circumstances determined so much by a birth lottery? How do we maximize happiness in such an unfair society?
