Like the title says, I live paycheck to paycheck. I’m in my mid-30’s and I’ve always lived this way and it definitely isn’t by choice. I recently started a new job working as an assistant to a very wealthy business owner. On Friday, he pulls me into his office to let me know that there was a payroll delay so I won’t be paid on this check, but “don’t worry because it’ll all be on the next one.” I immediately started to panic inside because a late paycheck means a late rent payment (among other things), and I’ve paid late so many times at this point they might evict me. My boss said it so casually it was shocking. I drove home seething, wondering how he could be so casual about my livelihood and suddenly it dawned on me—this man inherited a business from his family and never in his…
Buzzword Bingo by Sex Dad
Will probably get this removed as a self-promo thing, but here's an r/antiwork anthem from my New Zealand-based punk band – Sex Dad. Enjoy! https://open.spotify.com/track/1VMTQJXRaWGXpBJfOePudj?si=948e58e3ff2e4fc9
As the title suggests I’m considering leaving my job at the post office (been here over 2 years, I have the bennies and the 401k so for some leaving that behind sounds like a stupid idea) that’s what I’ve been told by most everyone around me that I’m making “the worst mistake of my life.” Im only 22 and feel like I’m gonna end up wasting my life away working here and I want more out of it. I can’t afford to live without 2-3 other roommates on my current salary. How is that sustainable for years? So I’ve been flipping furniture I get for cheap or free, fix it up, paint it, and resell it. A month or so in and I’ve made almost half of what my job income is. I’m always trying to scale it but I love doing it. I also have another job lined up…
Kinda just need to vent and maybe get some validation. I have been sick since Thursday. I typically work W-Sun, so I got sick right at the beginning of my work week. More than 5 other employees have also been sick this past week as it’s going around. Standard upper respiratory symptoms. I’ve been getting every sickness that goes around, and typically have more severe and longer lasting symptoms than the average person. IDK why. But it’s been crappy. I was able to get coverage for all but one of my scheduled shifts. Today my manager messaged me saying at this point I need a doctors note. I was trying to avoid the doc bc I don’t have insurance, but my manager and other coworkers were encouraging me to come in anyway, and to just wear a mask or take some medicine, as some other employees had done. This gave…
Context: About 8 years ago I worked for a limo company as a weekend, then full time driver. Pretty good company with a boss who was strict but fair. Company gets bought out by two brothers who already own a cab company. Within a few weeks I was offered the job of operations manager and even though I had some misgivings the brothers laid out plans to buy more vehicles and expand., it looked like things were going well so I went for it. Fast forward about 6 months and basically nothing had happened… and then they missed payroll, but made it up the next day. Okay, a serious oopsie but it was all made right. Two weeks later they missed payroll again and that Friday I had an office full of angry drivers. Conference call and the owners said there was a mix up in banking between the Limo…
10-hour shifts. ZERO breaks
I’m sorry if this is the wrong sub to post this in but I’m not sure where else to ask this question. I’ve been working for a family owned retail store for the past 2 years now and as the title says, I regularly work 10 hour shifts and get zero breaks. I’m the only person who’s working in the store so I have to find time between customers to eat anything or to use the restroom. Now I’m aware this illegal in the state of Illinois, so my question is how can I the whistle on this illegal practice and whether or not I should? I have no qualms about blowing the whistle on my employers because they break MANY other rules in the liquor business and have done wrong by their employees many times since I’ve worked here.
