finding a job in a small college town
Sorry if this is all over the place, I just need to get it out. I (19f) am currently going to college in a small college town. I've had a couple jobs here and there but unfortunately none of them pay nearly enough, I get little to no family support so most of the weight of paying my tuition falls on me and loans. I used to work at my school's chicfila but they only paid around 8.13/hr and due to my busy class schedule I only got about 120+$ on each paycheck and my phone bill alone was 79$. Over the summer I worked at a Popeyes but couldn't keep that up due to how far away it was. I finally started as an overnight server at IHOP and made good money but that job quickly became dangerous. I would get to and from that job on an electric…
Ok this is kinda stupid but basically I was working as a waiter, and my boss was breaking some labor laws (was paying me $9 even when she had me wash dishes, didn’t let me get tips while I was being trained, and some other bs with the job) so ofc I found a new job and didn’t tell her. Then I’m working on what I thought was gonna be my second to last day, and some guy comes in looking for a job, and she has the nerve to say “You have to be competent, bc nobody I hire these days is competent.” While I’m sitting right there. Ofc to her competent is you go to work for 8 hours and don’t sit down once. So I say (after eating lunch bc free food lol) that I need to go move my car and I’ll be right back. Then…
I’ve been at the company for 2.5 months and my manager is awful. I’m already on a PIP bc she wants me gone, is making my life a living hell, and obviously it’s taking a toll on my mental health. My only concern is quitting without another job lined up will inhibit future interviews. (I am planning on saying I was a contract hire to try and work around this). I already paid March rent, and my insurance is active til end of month. I have 4 interviews next week as it is, one of them being second round. I truly just don’t know if I can take working with my manager anymore. It’s taking a toll on my health and I’m not sleeping well. I have $51,000 in savings and $600 rent. Single. No kids or pets. No debt. TC: 95K
So, the state that I live in has pretty clear wage laws with harsh penalties that are easy to get enforced swiftly by a court. If they don't pay you on time, it's 3x damages. If they don't pay you on your last day, it's 3x damages. You cannot waive these rights under any circumstances and neither can they. So I was employed by a startup based in CA (that had no clue about my state's wage laws) that was about to close a fundraising round in early December. Very clear offer letter obviously written by an attorney. Clear salary and benefits. Clear pay dates and terms. Etc.. All seemed well and normal. Started work on my start date. Then payday came……..and no pay. I asked what's up and they said we were all going to get paid when we closed the round. It seemed imminent, and I also knew…
