I’m retired, Previous employer wants me back on limited basis. It’ll be hourly contract work. They want to pay me at my previous full time rate. Seem fair? I’m not desperate for $$ but would be useful to contribute and get paid.
Employment at will means, and even with cases of stricter labour laws, you can even get fired for crying at work. I am fortunate enough to live in a country with hardcore protection for workers, and I find the concept of being able to just fire anyone at will appalling. Apparently some employers use the reasoning that behaviour like crying negatively impacts the atmosphere in the work place. I was once “disciplined” for misbehaving on a weekend team building event as well as for being drunk during the day at work, and they literally begged me to resign because where I live it is so hard to fire anyone. The entire concept of employment at will is anathema to the culture of labour relations in South Africa, and I find the idea of firing someone for crying to be particularly disgusting. https://preview.redd.it/uwqbdyez6ofa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=82c15060093f955af6986254190c4f94cbbeff8e
I feel this is the best Reddit to ask about this. To be clear this isn’t my current employer we worked together on a project last month and we’re going to meet for a debrief. We are supposed to meet this evening but he hasn’t reached out to confirm and neither have I considering I don’t really want to go lol. Just wondering if it’s on him for not following up or me for not showing up.
Help me decide my last day
The owner sent a text to the assistant manager saying “when T is back, fire A” A was also in the text thread. The assistant manager liked the text message. Neither of them realized that A saw the text. This is just one of many reasons to quit. Several of us are putting in our notice. My bank account tells me to work the rest of the month. Myself is telling me to give 2 weeks notice tomorrow. So of course, ask the internet. 2 weeks notice tomorrow or 2 weeks notice on 2/11? Eta – this was a fun money job. I not relying on it financially.

The Precedent
My employer, a large company, mishandled my sexual harassment complaint, now I want to name the company and my story. Can they fire me for that?
Fired for Slack DM’s
Let me start by saying that I already know I’m a dummy for thinking this wouldn’t happen. Backstory: my job has been doing a bunch of shady shit to cut costs bc their business is failing so I’ve already had one foot out the door. As such, I’ve been venting via Slack DMs with my colleague. We were both fired yesterday. They gave us a bunch of bullet points ab “violating culture and policy”, etc. They only did this because they couldn’t afford to pay us anymore and they wanted to make sure that they didn’t have to pay unemployment. They also threatened legal action if we talked to any of our ex-coworkers about it. The shitty part about all of it is that I’ve been such a loyal employee through all of it. I’ve worked hard and never had any performance issues. My husband wanted me to quit so…
