A few years ago my brother started working an office job and was asked to fetch the business mail in the mornings from a nearby post office.
Fast forward to a week later and the Manager came to see him to ask why he was “late for work”. Bro explained that he’d been standing in line to retrieve some packages for the business at the PO.
The Manager said he expected my brother to get the mail before work and still be at his desk to start at 09:00 – in other words to work an extra 2.5hrs or so every week. The words “Team Player” might have come up.
I helped him draft an e-mail to the Manager explaining this amounted to free labor and if he wanted to have the mail by 9, he could change my bro’s schedule so he started and finished 30 minutes earlier.
Manager replied saying my bro’s predecessor had no problem working for free and he wouldn’t change the schedule. Criticized my bro for a “bad attitude” and without a trace of irony said he’d “give up his own time” to get the mail himself.
