Just a rant…I live abroad for 4 years now and recently my dad have been struggling with a come-and-go fight with cancer, he had his first tumours 10 years ago and since then he had 4 surgeries, numerous chemo sessions and different treatments. Last week he called me from hospital asking if he could see me, it’s been 4 years that we don’t see each other in person. I spoke to my manager, who has the same issue with his dad, and he said it wouldn’t be a problem because I have 24 days PTO to take. That talk happened on Friday morning.
Friday evening we had an “all hands meeting”, during the meeting it’s was announced that 25% of the company was being laid off. Fortunately (or not) I’m not one of them. So, I bought the tickets, reserved a transfer to pick me up at the airport and bring me to the hospital first thing, schedule 2 weeks of PTO and was concerned about it, after all it’s probably the last time I’ll see my dad.
I did everything on Friday, today when at work, the manager called me and said that he couldn’t approve my PTO due to the new policies, I can take days off but not on this short notice. I explained to him the gravity of the situation but he is not the one approving holidays anymore. The Director is the one approving, but he’s not the one passing over the information.
So, now I have to explain to my passing dad that we won’t be able to see each other OR I’m explaining to my manager why he lost the only idiot who accepted to do the Night Shift…
