Company wants coworker for prove he took “necessary” time off for his mother’s funeral.

I'll try to make this quick because it's more of a rant than anything. I've been working at this company for almost two years, and my coworker has been here over 20. His mom passed over the weekend, and he took 3 days off (which is covered under the union contract) as paid bereavement days. He came back to work today and HR is wanting him to “prove” that all 3 days were necessary. Now, I've never in my life heard of this. Ever. Every company I've ever worked for that had bereavement days just let you use them. They MIGHT want in obituary if you've had 3 family members die this year already or something, but to prove that each day you took off was necessary? I'm a union steward here. I'm about ready to just start filing grievances and drag our reps in for a meeting with HR…

I'm a union steward here. I'm about ready to just start filing grievances and drag our reps in for a meeting with HR and start chewing ass. WTF is wrong with people that they want someone to prove they needed all 3 days when their parent died?

Like I said, this is more of a rant than anything. I'm livid.
