Antiwork

Consider getting your EMT cert. Usually takes less than a year. I work for a private IFT company and work full-time on average ten days out of the month and off the rest.

Just wanted to shoot that out there for anyone looking for direction for a job that requires little to no time commitment/investment in schooling with a decent schedule. I work a 48on 96 off schedule(2 days on and 4 days off) and feel like I hardly work at all. The key here is finding a private company. They usually pay way more than working with the city(i.e. firefighter) and the type of services they offer. I make about base mid 50ks. I speak for interfacility transfers as they are more low accuity and almost never emergent. So most of the time you will just take memaw in the ER back to her rocker at the nursing home down the road. 911 services however are a different beast. EMT as role in itself is just a stepping stone as well. So if you're looking to advance your career in the healthcare…

The key here is finding a private company. They usually pay way more than working with the city(i.e. firefighter) and the type of services they offer. I make about base mid 50ks. So most of the time you will just take memaw in the ER back to her rocker at the nursing home down the road. 911 services however are a different beast. EMT as role in itself is just a stepping stone as well. So if you're looking to advance your career in the healthcare field this is a good place to start. You'll find opportunities and learn about gigs in the area/country.

Only draw backs are you will be hammered in the head by your course book until you can speak the language, it cannot be half-assed. But this is a ,give or take , 3-12 month course depending on where you take the course. This is contingent upon your area as well like I live in a suburban area in the midwest, I don't imagine more rural areas having anything available although it wouldn't hurt to just ask your hospitals. Its ideal if you can find places with a 48/96 schedule meaning you'll get paid to eat sleep and shit the entire time. Think of it as living in the station for a few days, but you'll be called upon even in the early morning hours just to give memaw a ride home. Im a 32 year old dude but we get all ages working together. You're going to be bunking up with people in a station so with that being said dumb ass drama can breakout.

Only things I'd say the job really requires are the ability to juggle sleep, somewhat be able to lift/have some strength, a valid driver license, and a will to be there.

Anyways, just thought I'd help out a lot of y'all looking to escape where you're at. I came from the corporate world and do not miss it all. I have more time off than I ever did and down time is pretty sweet. Sometimes you can go hours or all day without a call. Be advised this isn't for everyone as the medical field isn't for the faint.
