Hi. Long time lurker. I very much believe in the sentiment of this subreddit. Let me know if this post doesn't fit.
I have an opportunity to become a Lead Worker at my job. I've been working there for a year and a half. It's rough but important work so I don't mind it(disability care).
I really appreciate my boss, she's a sweet lady, but her boss is difficult. She's very uh… hard to work with. All my coworkers hate her and hate working with her. One of my coworkers snapped a few months ago and called her out on all her bs. That coworker is too important to fire lol. My coworkers talk about how she treats me horribly. I honestly haven't noticed much.
She has snapped at me for some dumb things before and made me cry once. But I get enough compliments over my work with the clients that I don't care.
What I'm trying to say is that I like my job. I get $16/hour and will get a slight raise when I start passing medication. I work 30 hours a week.
I'm considering becoming a Lead Worker. This would move me up to 40 hours a week, I think it includes a raise? I would have the same days off, but would do paperwork, statistics, oversee the floor, and work the floor normally. I would be in charge of training new employees and would guide my current coworkers.
Downsides? I would be On-Call for a week every 4 weeks.
I like the idea. And I think I can do it. It has a lot of training but I'm not sure it's a good idea. My family is financially unstable so getting a position with more hours + a raise would help significantly. But I don't want to be taken advantage of. I've been told it's easy. My coworker mentioned she was being 'groomed' towards the lead worker position when she's already the cook.
Has anyone worked a position like this? How do I take the opportunity without being manipulated or overworked? Should I not consider it at all? Is On-Call really that bad?
Thank you for any and all advice. I just don't want to train for several months, get the position, and fall due to stress.
