Corporations Are Not Our Friends

I've seen quite a few conversations about a specific topic on here, and that topic is company loyalty. A little while ago, for example, I saw someone post about how they weren't sure if they should feel guilty about getting paid for a full 40 hours but basically doing all their work every time in far fewer hours. And to everyone who might be feeling immoral when they do something like that, or may struggle with guilt, or feel disloyal or whatever, I want you to be aware of something: you are being manipulated. Corporations often intentionally attempt to induce feelings of loyalty and guilt. Why? Because this is a way that they can control you without having to expend additional resources. Corporations often intentionally attempt to induce feelings of loyalty and guilt. Why? Because this is a way that they can control you without having to expend additional resources.

If you have to incentivise someone to work 2 hours of overtime by paying them a lot more, that costs the company resources. But if you can get someone to volunteer to stay 2 hours longer by guilting them into it, that's free.

Everything corporations and their owners/CEOs do is about cutting their costs. It is purely about their bottom line and benefitting them. The moment you no longer benefit them, they will get rid of you. If the work you do produces 50 dollars in value every hour but they can get away with paying you 8 bucks per hour then they WILL do that. If they can get you to work longer for them, they will try that but asking for additional PTO on top of what's in your contract will get you laughed at.

They will tell you that “a good worker this” or “a good worker that.” That you're lazy for not wanting to work a certain amount. Or that you're not a team player if you don't pick up the slack. Don't listen to any of these things. They are emotional manipulation tactics that exist so they can increase their profits at the cost of you.

When interacting with a corporation follow two rules and two rules only: Take what you can get away with and demand as much as you can.

They will always fight tooth and nail for their profits with no mercy or consideration, if you do anything other than fighting tooth and nail for your wages, time off, to protect your agreed upon working schedule, etc. because of some desire to be moral, or show loyalty, or out of guilt, you are letting yourself be played.

Companies are not people. They deserve no loyalty. They deserve no consideration. And you should never feel guilty about taking whatever you can, because the people running them will never feel guilty about taking whatever they can from you.

Have solidarity only with your fellow workers. Join a union or unionize if you can. Fight together to get your wages as high as possible, your time off as long as possible, and your working conditions as comfortable as possible. Because with corporations you only get what you fight for together.
