Did not receive back pay after waiting 6 months for promotion pay increase.

Advice needed. Tl;dr at the end. I was promoted in February and I foolishly agreed to accept the promotion and wait for my raise. My boss (VP) explained that since I just received my annual increase the powers that be would be less inclined to approve a significant increase for my promotion. So waiting would be in my favor. She strongly suggested that I would receive back pay and even cited her own experience of being promoted and receiving back pay. It wasn’t until August that I received my increase. My boss (VP) and her boss (SVP) were in the room at the time. The amount was lower than a previous estimate I was given. But I accepted as I did not want to deal with it anymore. It wasn’t until August that I received my increase. My boss (VP) and her boss (SVP) were in the room at the time. The amount was lower than a previous estimate I was given. But I accepted as I did not want to deal with it anymore. Before wrapping the discussion I asked about back pay. The SVP quickly stated “we don’t do that”.

So, at this point, I’ve been lied to by one or the other regarding back pay.

A few weeks later, a peer on my team receives a promotion, is dissatisfied with the amount, and quits. I checked in with her and asked “Were you asked to wait to receive your increase?” And she says “No.”

Fast forward to now, I am interviewing with another company. It is going well. And I’m growing more frustrated with how the pay thing worked out here. It really boils down to unequal treatment. Why was it okay that I took on increased responsibility for free for 6 months, when others were not asked to?

I am thinking about meeting with HR after I put in my notice to discuss the situation and see if they are willing to give me that back pay before I leave. Is that foolish?

Tl:;dr after being promoted, I waited 6 months for a raise and did not get back pay. I know this has not been the case for peers. I’m about to quit, but should I speak to hr about this when I give my notice?
