I (23M) work as the sole employee in Marketing for an electrical engineering company that has recently seen a downturn in revenue and a very high turnover of staff – main reasons being the usual refusal to pay a market wage for hardworking employees.
I finally decided to make the move away from the company and was informed that my role would be taken over by the directors 18 year old daughter while she completes an apprenticeship course. I said that this is clearly a mistake as she will have no one to learn from herself, and the company needs someone with at least some experience in similar roles.
Anyway whilst training her up today before I leave, she tells me that despite her being in for 20 hours this week, that she doesn't start to get paid until she 'properly' starts once I leave and her apprenticeship course begins.
I think it's horribly unfair on her in the first place to expect her to perform this role by herself, but to do so unpaid is so so bad. She seems lovely and I feel sorry for her if there's any pressure placed on her by her father. She was already offering to stay late and cancel pre-booked holidays to learn from me whilst I'm still here.
Nothing amazes me about this company anymore. It's one thing to be tight with money to your own employees but to illegally not pay your own daughter a wage whilst she learns on the job was a new low in my eyes.
