I am a budget analyst for a decent size medical group in the North East. I have been at this job since Oct 2022 and my team consists of myself and my manager.
During the interview process my now manager warned that there would certain months where the hours and work load would be more intense than normal months. She also asked me what my goals and aspirations were in my career and life. I explained to her that my wife and I were getting ready to start a family and I wanted to be apart of a stable organization.
Fast forward to now and I am approaching my first full year with the company and my wife is due to give birth at the end of Aug.
I have had many sit downs with my manager since I started and every single time she tells me i need to do better and she needs to see more effort. During the busy months I spoke about above I was working between 55 and 60 hours a week including most weekends and she was never satisfied with the effort.
In our most recent sit down she said going into year 2 her expectations will be even higher and I really need to decide if this is the job for me with a baby on the way. My effort the 1st year was unsatisfactory and she's not going to lower her expectations just because I am having a baby.
I have asked her several times how much more is she expecting beyond the 55-60 hours I put in during the busy months. She told me during the busy months she goes home after her normal 8 hours takes a nap and then logs back on around 10pm and works until 3am takes another nap and then reports to work for 9 am. This is insane to me.
I'm going to be responsible for watching my son every day from 5pm until 9pm when his mother gets home from work. Is it realistic to expect someone in my situation to log back on and begin working again at 9pm until the wee hours of the morning? Surely being salary doesn't mean I should be expected to work unlimited hours.
I have 12 weeks off for paternity leave starting in Sept and I will definitely be looking for a new job but in the mean time and in the event I can't find something before my leave is up what should I do? Do I request to speak to her boss to see if these expectations are reasonable? should I call HR?. Other than her unrealistic expectations I actually like the job.
